I have finally gotten round to getting Broadband installed at home, about ******* time too. I've gone with Pipex 500 (512/256 Unlimited) and it should be up and running in about a week.

Congrats. I take it you'll be like Yoda now?
His name was MackemX
What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
It'll be so sweet
Run this test and see how it is working.... mine varies but is 700 to 1 meg (normally.... last week it dropped to 100k for 2 days)

Long story, look up my thread from a few weeks ago.
Short version: The company and their network sucks. If not for the highway in the way I could get a better company. -
I get
File Size: 150.005 KB
Time Elapsed: 1.434 seconds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
836.88 Kbps
(104.61 KBps)
with http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp
and I get:
kbps: 8200.3
KB/s: 1025.0375
Mbps: 8.00810546875
with a local site
and I download from microsoft.com at over 10 mbits per sec.
These tests are worthless :/ -

I did a couple of tests here at work. I knew we had a quick connection, but infinity

Hello,
Craig Tucker - old news. That happens when you hit the REFRESH button :P

Even so, 25 Megabytes per second, not too shabby.

Congrats VCDHunter. Let's just hope you have better results and less aggravation than Flaystus

Cheers me old china. I'm getting excited now thinking of getting back online and enjoying the benefits of high speed* internet connection.
*Whilst 512k may not seem that quick to most of you, for us brits its not bad at all.

Also, compared to a lot of european places, we are very behind!!
Anyway, if you're interested in the Eclipse internet, click here for details

$20 a Month ? Thats about £10. You lucky bastard. I'm paying £24 plus £10.99 BT line rental so its £35 for 512/256.
I think I may have been optomistic about having this up and running in about a week - the first series of tests on the line take 3 days.

But it's still better than $40/50 with cable PLUS cable bills :P

Dr Dos: One thing I learned is that if you say something sucks have a suggestion or two.
The only way I know to test any network be it direct or remote,
slipp, shell, PPP, launchpad or service, is to time ftp the most local host server.
Traceroute is not the way to find it. You will have to ask for it or obtain
a "forest map".
Once you have obtained the name of the server, it will be the one the
line monkeys use. It will have a bunch of software for setup, testing and
distribution. Ftp to the /bin/distro or wherever these files are and
look for something around 10 megs or so - netscape is a good choice.
Set for integer, set for hash and get the file. The results are your
actual network speed.
The commands are: bold The responses are italic
Go to START -> RUN
In the "Open" field type ftp -A serverhostname.com
ftp command window appears as:
Connected to serverhostname.com.
220 server FTP server (serverhostname.com) ready.
331 Guest login ok, send ident as password.
230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply.
Anonymous login succeeded for LoginName@ComputerName
type bin
ftp> bin
200 Type set to I.
type hash
ftp> hash
Hash mark printing On ftp: (2048 bytes/hash mark) .
type lcd desktop
ftp> lcd desktop
Local directory now C:\Documents and Settings\LoginName\Desktop.
type cd dist
ftp> cd dist
250 CWD command successful.
type get Netscape.exe (case sensitive)
ftp> get Netscape.exe
200 PORT command successful.
150 Binary data connection for Netscape.exe (your IP addr, port#) (xxxxxxxxxxx bytes).
################################
NOTE: IF instead you get this response:
ftp> get Netscape.exe
200 PORT command successful.
550 Netscape.exe: No such file or directory.
The server you are on does not have the specific file or you have a
typo.
If you've got the hash marks appearing, they will keep going across
and down until...
####
226 Binary Transfer complete.
ftp: xxxxxxxxxxx bytes received in xxx.xxSeconds xxx.xxbytes/sec.
