  1. I have reasently heard of RMVB and how good it is. I have downloaded Easy RealMedia Tools and it seems great.

My problem is I can't find anything online about the settings of this program and how it compares to XviD.

Does anyone use this file format and can point me to some data relating to it.

  2. I haven't cared for Real's products in the past. They've been buggy (it was always so easy to crash RealPlayer) and audio and video was always of such low quality. But I've seen a few videos with RMVB that have looked very good, especially given their size. At least in the ballpark of Divx and Xvid.

I have a preference for open source so I'll stick with Xvid and better documented containers like AVI. As far as I know there are no set top players that support RMVB.

  3. First off you don't need RealPlayer to play RMVB files, you can now use Real Alternative Codec with Media Player Clasic.

From what i heard you can get XviD quality and even less of a file size, its just I don't know what settings I need.

As for a set top box I use my Xbox with XBMC and it plays then great.

That's what I've been using the last few months -- when I have no choice but to view a Real file. The point is that previous experience with Real products has left me reluctant to try anything else from them.

It would have to get twice as good as Xvid before I would even consider it. I want to stay away from proprietary formats with little support by any other software. The few times I've gotten RMVB files that contained something I wanted to keep I converted them to Xvid AVIs.

OK, there's one set top box (that's really a Wintel computer) that supports the format. Compared to hundreds of set top boxes that can play Divx/Xvid.

Obviously, you'r welcome to use whatever software you like. I'd even like to read about people's experience with RMVB. I just don't see any good reason to use it at this point.

Go and check out doom9's latest codec comparison. XviD beat RV again, although I guess that is just his opinion, you might care less about keeping details.

  7. Thanks for the link it was exactly what I needed to read.

I was told by someone that RMVB would compress DivX by 50% with little quality loss, which I found hard to believe so I desided to check it out for myself.

After trying it out myself, and reading that article, I guess he was wrong.
