After reading several posts on how to moisture protect a printed DVD and having just received my Epson R200 I was ready to try the methods out. Wal-Mart did not have the Pat Nimrock and Home Depot did not have Krylon and I was about to leave Home depot when I saw in the Varnish section "Minwax polycrylic protective finish" it is a water based finish but is waterproof when it drys. I bought a clear gloss spray can, its expensive at near 8.00. I have used this coating on some simple furniture I had built and it worked great. It goes a little milky looking but drys absolutey clear and glossy. It leaves the surface a little grainy like some of the posts said about krylon, but it had no visible effect on the printer ink. I am going to use it until I can pick up some Pat Nimrock which seems to be the preferred brand.

An additional comment on my previous post. If you get the minwax spray on the back side on the disk you can wipe it off with a wet cloth and is perfectly clean with no residue left.

Most people like the Pat Nimrock, but I have a different experience. I have tried Krylon Matte, Satin, gloss, and Triple Thick Gloss. I like the Satin the best. I tried Pat Nimrock Matte and Gloss. With Nimrock gloss, had a hard time to get it not to run, even though I tried very light coats. It also smelled strong. The previous Krylons were strong smelling also, but the last can of satin I bought had a different smell. It had almost a citrus smell, like oranges. It really masked the smell. After all my testing, I'm going to stick with Krylon Satin. Dries real quick too, like less than 5 minutes.

Where can I get some of this stuff in the UK??
Or at least equivilant of it?
many thanks -
I'll try some krylon when I find it. The nice thing about Minwax acrylic is that you can wipe off any runs on the reading surface and not leave any residue and its still waterprood when it drys.

I have no idea where you could find it in the UK, Its very common here. I tried another experiment this AM. After I had sprayed a disk cover yesterday and it dried overnight, (it was dry long before that) I turned it over and sprayed a heavy coat of minwax on the recording side, I then took to a sink and washed it under the faucet. It did not affect the printed side, completely cleaned the sprayed recording side and I recorded a movie on it with no problems, it played back flawlessly. It comes in Satin, semi gloss and clear gloss.

Bobaber,
How's the smell of the minwax stuff?
Does it stink like hell? -
That's one thing I hate about Homedepot, their selection on some things really sucks! I did buy some of the rust-olium stuff and it turned out OK but not great. I found the Pat Nimrock stuff at wally world yesterday. The also had krylon, so I got both.
