  1. Hi

I have lots of dvd-r with .VOB files burnt on just as a data file. Can anyone recomend a player able to play these? Can all the dvd players that can play mpeg files also play VOB files? - this isn't clear. It would also be nice to be able to play divx files too.

    thanks for the help

Take a look at www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers , and tick the boxes for the features you wish to have. I think playing raw MPEGs is referred to as MPEGISO and DVD-MPEGISO BTW
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Hi thanks for an amzingly quick reply!
I've done that and its really helpful, but I'm not sure whether all the DVD-MPEGISO players play VOB files aswell as mpegs.

Well, VOBs are just MPEG-2s with a couple of extras added, so I'd be fairly confident that if they can play RAW MPEG-2, they'll play authored MPEG-2 also I would think.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Doing some research it seemed the Phillips DVP642 would be a good choice for me, but there are a couple of posts saying there is no audio for raw VOB files so obviously some DVD-MPEGISO players won't be right for me.

There must be a player out there that can play raw VOB files with sound and everything!?

    Hello,

IF the vob files are in proper dvd format then just make a new dvd with the vobs inside a video_ts folder. They will play properly then. But they need to be inside the folder.

That is assuming that they were created within the dvd spec

  7. I don't know what you mean by proper dvd format. They are burnt as a single raw .VOB file - no .ISO no .BUP etc I reallly don't want to make all new discs. I can play them fine on VLC in my mac but I'm looking for a stand alone player that can handle them.

The dvp-642 will play raw vob but to get audio it must have an AC3 track.

Most MPEG-ISO players I have seen require the file be named .MPG or .MPEG

Yes but for straight unauthored vob, only the ac3 audio worked.
Divx/xvid also play with mp3 audio.

    @lordsmurf
When I first got the player, I also tested plain mpeg1 and mpeg2 and they played fine but I would have to see if I have any of those still on my DVD+rw testing discs to confirm the format of the audio but I believe most of them would have been mpeg1 layer2.

misread your comment on mpg mpeg extension. The vob extent is ok with the dvp-642 even with unauthored files.

  13. Hi,

thanks for all the help. I bought a Philips DVP-520 for just £44.99 from Sainsburys. It plays all my vobs brilliantly.

I haven't figured out how to get rid of the timer in the corner yet (if it is at all possible).
