Don't think XviD.org is updated yet, but:
    http://www.xvid.org/cvs/chora/co.php/xvidcore/ChangeLog?r=1.2.2.8
This is XviD 1.0.3 bugfix release.

This release fixes very minor bugs. It is source and binary compatible
    with the previous version.

As a sidenote, the 1.1 is maturing fast these last weeks and it's quite possible
Santa Claus could bring you an official beta release of this new tree before the
    end of the new year.

The 1.1 tree brings a fair number of optimizations in the decoder, better quality
and more speed for the encoder, a brand new PowerPC port, a Linux AMD64 port...

    Changes since 1.0.2:

    * xvidcore
    - Fixed trellis optimization overflow for quant <= 2.
    - Don't read too short streams. This prevents from reading useless
    stream garbage.
    - Fixed 64 bit crashes because of addressing assuming 32bit integers. (Andre Werthman)
    - Fixed 2 diamond search bugs (one was causing searches in wrong directions,
the other one was causing an early exit)

    * VFW frontend
    - Better stride calculation

    * DShow frontend
    - Better stride calculation

    I also did a ICL 7.1 compile.

But is it still written primarily by hackers and pirates?

(It's a rhetorical question, of COURSE it's still written by hackers and pirates!)

    Mmm hmm.

DIVX.com is a bunch of programmers and developers.

XVID is a bunch of... uh... well, NOT that.

On any given day, there are a half dozen different "builds" of XVID. The current "spin" proclaims that they "can't compile their own code", for unclear reasons. So various people compile it - and on any given day, 5 of those 6 "builds" result in gigantic green blops or purple lines on your XVID-encoded videos.

USUALLY Koepi's build works, yeah? But frankly I think it would do worlds for their credibility if there were a centrally compiled version. Every OTHER amateur on Sourceforge manages to do it... why can't they?

Fact is that XVID is based on the early MPEG4 codec stolen from Microsoft. They CLAIM it's been completely rewritten, but if that's the case why are they trying to skirt legal issues by never compiling it? (Hint - they're under continual threat of being sued by ReelMagic among others).

No thanks. I'll take some REAL software please.

One could say that DXN were a bunch of hackers, turned sell outs. XviD are definatly just programmers and developers. The fact that most pirate material uses XviD as its video codec has nothing to do with them and I don't know where the hackers bit comes in.

Unclear reasons? The reasons are perfectly clear, as a free opensource project they can't afford to pay the pattent, etc. fees to the MPEG-LA, therefor it remains a source only educational project.

The XviD CVS on average isn't updated daily and when it is updated I am generally the only one (to my knowledge) who makes compiles available and as far as I know none of them have resulted in gigantic green and purple lines.

Let me ask you something. What do you use to encode mp3's? Obviously not LAME? Because by your definition that isn't REAL software either.

Should also point out that no one is forcing anyone to use potentially unstable cvs builds or to use XviD at all. I will say this though, I have never had any real issues with cvs XviD builds, but the last DivX alpha I installed, I had to remove as After Effects would no longer load.

  6. I used xvid for a while but only to decode the files that were in xvid format. I gave up in the end and switched to ffdshow. Why? Well because (and I am not the only person) when framserving an AVI file from Virtualdub (that I had captured) to Mainconcept, the video would be a green screen. It took me ages to work this one including lots of visits to doom9, virtualdub and this forum until I found somebody else who had experienced this and found the problem was the xvid codec

    YMMV I guess

So you are refering to using XviD for handling YV12? Personally I use the Helix YV12 codec.

  8. No. I ditched xvid for the aforementioned problems. When I did use it, it was to decode the xvid encoded videos I got. I found I could decode them fine using ffdshow. I never encode with it but then again I hardly ever encode in mpeg4

You didn't use it for encoding, but you were using for decoding XviD when frameserving something that you had captured?

That makes no sense, either you hadn't captured it, it wasn't XviD or you captured to XviD which would mean that you did encode with it.

Anyway, I just tried and I can frameserve an XviD source fine to TMPGEnc with XviD installed.

  10. I guess I had better explain

    1. I used xvid only to watch xvid avi files that people had given me - TV shows so presumably they had been downloaded

    2. I capture my own shows in MJPEG format. When I wanted to edit out ads in Virtualdub and frameserve to Mainconcept for MPEG2 encoding, I would get this green video only. Framserving to tmpgenc was okay but I find tmpgenc a bit slow for me

    3. Removing the xvid codec fixed problem 2. So there was an interaction between the xvid codec and Mainconcept that others have found also

    4. I can use ffdshows to decide xvid encoded videos since as I said I don't need the actual xvid codec to encode video

So as I originally suggested it sounds like perhaps a problem with XviD and YV12 rather than a problem with XviD's actualy decoding. Although XviD can also handle YUYV, YUY2, YVYU, UYVY, I420, IYUV. But some installs I think add a VIDC entry for YV12 pointing to xvidvfw.dll

Anyway that is the only way that I can see how XviD could effect MJPEG decoding/frameserving.

  12. A bit too technical for me but I will take your word for it. I just know what problem I had and how I fixed it!

I was among the first that report about xvid and mainconcept. The real problem is that I don't have any time currently to solve that tiny issue (just imagine: This is my first visit on this site after almost a week... I use to stay hours online before...)
Xvid is a great codec. Issues pop up always, but well.... That's the fun with this hobby, right?

  14. Well I didn't figure it out myself! I found a posting from somebody who had experienced it and took their advice. Interestingly I had had this problem for ages on another machine and gave up - didn't do anymore encoding on that machine but when it popped up on my main machine, I had no choice but to try and fix it

Looks to me that the problem is with main concept. If I compile xvidvfw without support for YUYV, YUY2, YVYU, UYVY, I420, IYUV, YV12 then there is no such issue.

With any of them enabled it seems you get green or garbled video, which is just plain wrong. For instance I have the helix codec setup to handle YV12 and I420, plus MS's own YUV decoder is setup to handle some of the others.

There is no reason why XviD should be loaded. Aside from the fact that VDub is outputting RGB24 if there is a specific codec setup to handle say YV12 then it should be used over XviD.

  16. Hey, Gurm, some serious prejudice coming from your end of the line, I can see. I have done _A LOT_ of experimentation/playing around with both DivX and XviD. I can honestly and confidently say DivX SUCKS and XviD RULES. DivX smoothes the image too much and gives higher resulting filesizes. XviD preserves the detail of the source and results in less of a filesize. I work with DV and DivX at 1500 kbps for a 1 minute clip gave me 12.5 MBs. Given the same attributes, XviD gave me 9.8 Mbs and looked a hell of a lot better. I for one do not judge people's software just because they are in beta phase. I'm disgusted at all the crap DivX makes and how much they hype themselves all over their webpage when they have constantly failed to impress me. Smudgemear galore. Don't you dare tell me, "You just don't know how to use the codec" because I have wondered in every nook and cranny of that codec. I call it Garbage. 5 or 6 builds? In the last year, I haven't seen more than 2. I have had the green blobs before, but with older versions of XviD, before they really got down to business with bug fixing and optimizations. Anyway, I'm finished. Ciao Mr. Prejudice.

I'm with State Of Mind re: XviD vs DivX - I've done quite a few tests also and come to the same conclusions. IMO XviD rocks !!!
    If in doubt, Google it.

  18. XviD - cheaper, higher quality, more easily available, no adware BS
DivX - charges for adfree, smoothing way too much, onlyone source for builds, adware in free version

Check out doom9's recent codec comparison....hackers and pirates my ass....

Agreed. XviD is my only consideration for MPEG-4 encoding. The codec is rock solid, and performs like a dream. Most people who have issues with green macroblocking, glitchy playback, have installed codec packs full of dll's they don't need, to decode media streams they'll never play. Most of them install also install ffdshow, which I've seen cause stability issues with other codecs. Why buy milk at the market, when you can get it from the cow?

On a side note, ensure the codec being used to decode your video is the codec you expect. 3ivX is an excellent example. The codec sets itself up as the defacto decoder for DivX, and XviD, with less than desirable results. It does this under the covers without even notifying you. Problems in playback? Ensure your actually using the proper codec to decode the stream.

Even though, technically you do have to "hack" away at code to get things just right when making improvements in codecs.

    I will never use DivX.

A bit harsh If a person or persons, turns from a life a crime, and starts an honest business (as honest as bunsiness can be anyway), then I say more power to them. If you we all took that sort of attitude, then no criminal would ever be reformed, and we'd never be forgiven for our mistakes. Not a place I'd prefer to live. We were all young once...
