  1. for burning about a 2 hour program

    i can capture these types

    mepg1 vcd .65gb/h
    mpeg2 .9gb/h
    mpeg2 half d1 .9gb/h
    mpeg2 5.4 gb/h
    mpeg2 cbr 5.4gb/h
    dvd standard 3.1gb/h
    dvd long 2.4gb/h
    dvd extra long 1.2gb/h
    svcd standard .8

i want good quality for this.. ive tested a few of them and mpeg2 cbr is very very good quality but won't fit onto the dvd+r

dvd standard is pretty good but will be to large

dvd long with edited commercials out would work and its decent

    mpeg1 vcd is also good

is there any difference between mpeg1 and 2?

    what is your recommended format?

if i captured in mpeg2 cbr, is there any converstion tool that would change its format but keep its quality for it to fit?

    thanks in advance

    Hello,

is there any difference between mpeg1 and 2?
HUGE DIFFERENCE! It's the difference between VHS and DVD basically.

Your best bet is to use mpeg 2 and set the bitrate manually using a videobitrate calculator to figure out the right length.

For a two hour capture your best bet is to capture DVD MPEG2, VBR (forget CBR unless you're making VCDs), about 4.5 Mbps average bitrate and say ...9000 peak. If a minimum setting is neeed, use 2000. Make sure audio is 48 KHz AC3 or MP2.

Capture in D1 (720x480) or 1/2D1 (352x480). If you're capping off satellite or cable, stick with full D1, otherwise either will do.

Use bitrate calculator (in tools section) to fine-tune your bitrate, but the 4500 will get you in the ballpark.

MPEG1 is CBR-only, not as efficient, and quality is lower. It's used for VCD. MPEG2 is used for SVCD and DVD and is a more efficient compression scheme. MPEG2 uses variable bitrate as well as CBR. VBR ramps up the bitrate for action scenes, and lowers it for static scenes. It makes the most of the space available, and should be the only MPEG2 mode you use. CBR is pretty much obsolete for DVD MPEG2 capture, and wastes disc space

  4. i set it to MPEG2 12.0 MBits/sec (full d1) 5.4 gb/h

when i look at the video datils for it.. its output stream is set to program

the rate details by default are:

    variable
    9600 bit rate
    12000 bit rate peak

    GOPs 15

    and video res is 720x480

should i bring down those bit rates a little?

  5. ok heres what i got:

    info i put in..

video length 2 hours 30 mins (i will edit to cut out halftime and commercials)

    dvd 1 x 4.37(dvd5)

    audio bitrate - 384kbit/s (default under mpeg 2 12.0mbits/s full d1)

    type DVD

    calculated bitrate 3673kbit/s
    dvd max bitrate 9406

    does that sound about right?

Sounds right, except the audio bitrate. Try dropping that to 224 Kbps since you're using MP2. 384 is overkill and only wastes space. Make sure the audio sample freq. is 48 KHz. This is critical.

Remember that your video bitrate should not exceed about 9800 Kbps for video. If you do you run the risk of the disc not playing on some players. So the ~9400 you picked should be fine.

Give it a try and see what you get
