Ive tried this a few times and it seems pretty cool for long road trips. I usually setup my tripod in the middle between the driver and passenger seat and manage to get it sturdy balanced. I was thinking of making a small movie of my road trip from here in MI to TX (a trip im planning to take next month) and videotape going through different cities and add narration afterward once I get to the editing. I think it would be a cool idea to do that and then put it all on DVD once all is said and done. Would be cool to show my brother who lives in TX more about where I live, or about the towns I go through during my trips.

Anyone ever tried doing that before?

I do it sometimes. The Steady hand function really helps. There are also camera mounts built that are made for cars.

Do you know of some places on finding good camera mounts? I know I could use a tripod, but it is also vulnerable to road bumps and vibrations in the car also. I would guess the widest view from the camcorder would be good too, no?

If you are brave enough, try enhancing the experience by hanging the camera upside down out the window so it is inches off the ground. Then flip the video. Really enhances the feeling of speed.

    Just don't let it drag . . . . . . .

Try setting the camera on a beanbag on the dashboard. Short of investing in expensive professional equipment, you'd be surprised how well this simple technique works.

Doesn't your brother drive through those same towns on his way to your house?

I used to do stuff like that when I had my old 4 wheel drive truck but quit when I was filming during white-out snow conditions on a country road one year. I looked out the window to the left side and saw a car crushed under the wheels of an 18 wheel transport! No more on the road filming for me. There are enough distractions and it's tough enough keeping the vehicle on the road without adding more grief...
