I have a DVD that I would like to copy and send to my son. I understand it may be possible to do that despite the DVD's protection mechanism. I'm more interested in sending him the video feature than preserving extra material on the DVD. How can I make a copy? I only have one DVD r/w drive, I guess an intermediate step is to copy the video to HD then to an empty DVD disk?

Copying commercial-release discs and giving them away is not something you are allowed to do. "Backups" are for personal use only, no distribution, not even to family members (exception: you live under the safe roof). If he really needs or wants the movie, he can go to the store and buy one, or you can buy it and mail him the new purchase.
