    Hi Guys

    A real newbie here...

At the mo I haven't much free HDD space (10Mb tops), so I was wondering if with the DVD ROM (Toshiba) & Pioneer 108 (should be buying it today), I can rip & burn without using my HDD to store the image? I will be using DVDDecrypter & DVDShrink.

Will there be any quality loss if it's done this way or am I best either deleting some more off the HD or buying another HD?

Your input will be greatly appreciated

  2. Did you mean 10 GB? 10 Mb is effectively zero, and I'd expect your PC to crash a lot.

Using DVDShrink to read and compress, you'll need approximately 4˝ GB for the results. Shrink places the results on your hard drive prior to burning; it has to - transcoding is too slow (on most machines) and too processor intensive to allow reliable burning on-the-fly.

Once the results (the ISO file) is on your hard drive, Decrypter will burn without using any additional space.

10 GB isn't enough to allow ripping with Decrypter, then Shrinking from there (unless the source is close to 4˝ GB to begin with). You need the 4˝ GB plus the size of the source, and many source DVDs approach 8 GB - meaning you'd need about 13 GB free.

No. You have to at least get the shrunken files stored on the HDD, that's 5 GB. (Provided you'll only use DVDShrink.)
If you rip with decrypter, add ~9 GB for the decrypted (but not shrunk) files.
Quality will be the same, but you seriously need more HDD space - I have 10 GB for rips, 5 GB for DVD5 file system and another 5 GB for DVD image.

    <edit> I read 10 GB too - 10 MB won't get you anywhere at all! </edit>

I tend to agree with the other here - about 15GB would be ideal, but you could get away with roughly 6GB if you use DVDShrink to rip and transcode in the one action.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hi Guys

    Sorry - I meant to say 10Gb!

Can you tell me in 'newbie' language what you mean here...please?

    Thanks

PS. I think in the end I'll be done with it & buy another HD. Forget the hassle...

They mean that you should add a second hard drive, but you already figured that out.

Can I ask why 6Gb is the minimum? Would I be able to rip & burn a DVD9 disc to DVD5 with my 10Gb OK?

    Thanks a lot

If the original source is a dvd5, then yes
If the source is a dvd9, then no

    Hey Guys

I've just had an idea! I can fill a couple of blank DVD's worth with mp3 files (of which I have a plenty on my drive) thus freeing up around 9Gb of HD space. In total I'll have around 18Gb to play with - YIPPPEEEE!!!

    How about that?

Sounds like a good idea. I back up all my mp3's to dvd's - can't beat the storage capacity!

I'm not sure if folks above made it clear exactly why you'd need more than 4.5GB... here's the deal.... Usually DVDShrink can read the DVD, and encode to to your hdd, shrunk to 4.5GB. Sometimes DVDShrink won't read a disc for some reason, so you'd need to use DVD Decryptor to 'decrypt' and copy the disc (without shrinking) to your hard drive. This can take up to 9GB. Then, in DVDShrink, you can load these files, and shrink down to 4.5GB. So at most, you'll need 9GB + 4.5GB = 13.5GB. Seems like you should be fine with your 18GB free!

15GB will give you plenty of room to rip a DVD9 (8.5GB) and output a DVD5 (4.38GB), with a little bit of room left over.

6GB will be just enough to output a DVD5 (4.38GB) with a little bit of room left over.
    If in doubt, Google it.
