Hi All!
I'm very new to these forums, but I really need your help!!
OK. I have an LG DVD-ROM and an LG DVD-RW
I am using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 to burn from the source (DVD-ROM) to destination (DVD-RW). When I do this, the burned DVD locks up and eventually stops playing in my Hitachi DVD player (DV-P415U), and my Hitachi DVD recorder. I am using Memorex DVD-R's to burn with.
HOWEVER, when I just use the DVD-RW for source and destination, the DVD's work fine!
I honestly don't understand it. Both ways the data is copied to the HD in the same spot. What is the difference???
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. As a Computer Technician it really ticks me off to not understand something so ridiculous!
Thanks =)

Use better dvd media like VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN.
MEMOREX is considered crappy media. -
I agree that Memorex isn't the best, but I'm not sure why it should matter.
If I use just the DVD-RW for source and destination, the DVD copies fine.
My only theory is that it has something to do with the fact that it's an IDE problem, but even so, it's not like both DVD drives are working at the same time.....
I'm stumpped....===========

That's not direct burning. Direct burning would be Reader to Writer with nothing being written to the HD. This is typically the worst way to burn.
Since you are writing a file to the HD first then burning that file with the writer [Reader-HD-Writer] that should work and is the best approach.
You mentioned that when you use your writer as the reader your burns work [Writer-HD-Writer]. That suggests that your Reader (ROM drive) might be at fault. If burns from your ROM drive consistent fail or rather the resultant disc does not play, I would consider replacing your ROM drive.
Does the discs play in your computer?
Remember there are several areas that cause problems:
ROM device
Burner
Blank Media
Burn application
Source Material
Player Unit
A problem with any one of the above can cause a burned DVD not to play.
Hope that helps. -
Well, what I do is I use my ROM to copy the source disk to the HD.
Then once that process is done, the HD copies it back to the RW.
But, what I don't understand is, what is the difference whether the ROM or the RW copies the data to the HD for it to be burned?
I just bought my ROM in December.
And yes, they play on my computer perfectly.===========

The difference would be one device rips the source fine and the other does not. The issue is with the ripping process since you have mentioned that DVDs work when you use the burner to rip and burn. Thus something is not quite right when the ROM device does the ripping.
It's odd that DVDs ripped by the ROM device work on your computer but not in a stand alone unit. Though it's not unusual. What works on your computer does not necessarily work in a player. And what works in your player does not mean it will work in someone else's player.
However, you have identified that the DVD does play; which means it's not DOA.
This is a hard one to troubleshoot. If you have another DVD Rom device around, I would suggest try using that one and see if the samething happens. If it does, then you might have a hardware issue - either with the cable or port on the motherboard. I had that happen to me: bad IDE cable one time and another time a bad SATA port. Those types of issues are not common but can happen.
Or you can chalk it up to gremlins and just use the burner to rip and burn.

It could also mean your player doesn't like the memorex media. or that it doesn't like -R media but does like -RW media. That is also a possibility. Have you tried +R discs with the booktype set?
My brother had a player that choked on every -R but played +R fine. Which goes against the conventional wisdom that -R is more compatible.
Good Luck
