I am about to buy one or the other as they are both around the same price and have the features I want. Need some expert advise. Overall I am looking for the one that will be most trouble free and reliable. (easy to use wont hurt) I am leaning toward the Pany but dont know if my Lite-on 811s will read a RAM?
Or should I go for the Sony RDRVX500 which is over 100 bucks more, is it worth it?

I would do NEITHER. Combo units tend to break down quickly. Doesn't matter who makes them. Even pro equipment is like this. Combos suck.

Buy a good VCR, buy a good recorder.

  3. What if you buy a combo unit and the VCR breaks and you want to send it back and now you do not even have a DVD player. Always buy a one self unit.

I understand what you are saying, but a combo will serve my purpose.
If you had a gun to your head which one would you choose?

  6. Listen to lordsmurf, spiderman2k1 and samijubal, buit if you have a gun to your head... go for Pany. It is has better quality and reliability ratings.

I am not worried about the VCR too much, just want it mostly for dubs of my old home vidieo, only have around 8 of them and am too busy to do it on my computer.
Which is the better DVD recorder and will give me the least problems?

None. All recorders have some problem. There is not a single one that exists that is flawless.

The best quality is easily the JVC.

As far as the "gun to the head" question, I'd pick the trigger. In the end, it'll give you the same results.

You're asking for blessing on one of these machines. You won't get it. You've seemingly made up your mind that you WILL be getting one of the two combos. Just flip a quarter and be done with it.

OK, I do respect what you say. I have not made up my mind at all.
If I buy just a DVD recorder can I just plug my 5 year old VCR into it and make copies of my home videos without any upgrade to the VCR or any ohter expensive or complicated equipment.
I was figuring to buy the combo now and upgrade in a year or so when they are better developed and cheaper. I can get the Pany combo for about $270. after rebate

Yes, you can...and these days (Christmas Holidays...New Year...) you can buy a good DVD recorder for less then US$270 (Pioneer, JVC, Panasonic).
