I'd like to buy DVD-R media in bulk, so as to save money. I'd be willing to drop about $300-$500 at once, that way I'd have it for the forseeable future.

I'd like to get high quality discs. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go to find media in bulk, to get the most bang for my bucks?

There is not a Circuit City within 4 hours of me, Best Buy is an hour away too (and I hate BB). So, I'm thinking online may be my best bet, although my friend can get Verbatim's at his Sam's Club for about .40 each in 50 pack spindles (which doesn't seem all that great a deal to me).

Any recommendations or advice? Thanks all!

The price keeps going down so you might
not save if you buy all of it now.

    I buy mine from Rima.

    Recommendations? No.

Advice? Yes - Update your profile to show your location... Are you talking Aussie Dollars, Canadian Dollars, US Dollars, Singapore Dollars etc.?

If people know where you are, it's easier for them to help you... not just in terms of media, but all sorts of things.

    Two things:

First, I assume you're in the USA, since you mentioned Sam's Club, so we're talking US Dollars.

Secondly, I agree completely with Goober57, No sense in spending that kind of money when the price of the discs continues to go down rather rapidly. I have some spindles of CD-R's that I bought a couple of years ago still, and today I could often get them free after rebate - so in a sense, I'm out the $10 or so that I paid for each of them. Not a big deal, but if you multiply it many times over, like what you intend to do...well, it might not serve you well to do that.

Maybe better if you buy a decent quantity that you need now, but not overdo it. I think unless you are a very heavy burner, 100 - 200 discs at a time would be enough to "keep in stock". Just my opinion. I don't know how much burning you do, of course.

I haven't seen anyplace online that gives huge discounts for buying that kind of quantity that you mentioned, although someone else might know where you can do that.

Well, I have been been backing up my DVD collection, which is in the 500-600 range, plus I do a lot of TV show trading with other collectors. Lots of TV shows never make it to DVD so that's how I get most of the ones I have, otherwise it's "wait and hope it comes out then buy it".

Anyway, I'll think out loud here, since early October, I've bought 2 50 spindles, 4 50 spindles, and 4 more 50 spindles, plus the original spindle I got when I got my DVD burner, so I've gone through about 950 DVD-Rs in 8 weeks. In January, I know I've got several large trades, totaling about 400 discs between them, plus I still need to finish backing up my collection (not completly done yet), and I'm still transfering all the old VHS tapes to DVD. I finished my wedding vids, but I've moved on to the kids tapes (never realized how much of them I had taped, lol), and similar projects.

So, that's my usage in a nutshell. Yes, I'm in America, how cruel and thoughtless of me to be so ethnocentric.

So, for those of you who buy from RIMA.com, do you always get the Japanese-make ones, or do you get the Taiwan ones too? I'd only want the Japanese ones.

As for kids, lol, I'm a grad student, so I do a lot of my research and studying at home. it's no big deal to do the DVD stuff whilst I'm doing other things.

There is no "Taiyo Yuden" brand item at Best Buy. There is "FUJI" media, which has PRODISCF01 as the 8x "made in Taiwan" media, and TYG02 for the "made in Japan" media.

  14. Hi,

I have bought the TY from rima.com as a reccomendation from this board and I have to say that i have not had 1 coatser and my customers are very happy. I bought 300 of them and have burned 200 so far. Flawless. BUt make sure you check the write speed of the disc. it does say right on the front label not to use the 8x disc's in a 4x drive. But i love the price and the shipping from rima. Will be buying all my discs from them for now on.
