Hello,
I don't have HDTV but all I see are "dolby digital" when it comes to hdtv broadcast ads (sports on Fox in particular).
Is DTS feasible for HDTV or would it take up more bandwidth that would otherwise go to the video quality????
Kevin
(or is it currently being offered and I don't know about it??)

it is feasable - and not that hard to do . but bandwidth is a major issue and as well real time dts encoding muxed to a transport stream (as used currently with Dolby). So cost is the deciding factor (hardware and bandwidth)

some recievers might not also be able to decode (i really dont know) -- so backwards comptability might be an issue ..

So whenever I do get HDTV I think I'll be happy with just Dolby digital

Technically it is very possible: You just need another Audio PID and a SID to andress it to the receiver. There are even some DVB receivers (like Humax 9100 for example) "DTS" compatible, even if there are no currently any DTS channels in Europe (only few AC3 / Dolby Digital ones)

Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound is part of the HDTV standard. They have a huge PDF file on http://www.atsc.org/standards.html explaining this.

that wasnt the question

I guess the real issue would be where DTS may fall in the context of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD. In the US at least, the broadcast issue is settled.
Digital movie theaters have another set of competing audio standards. -
if you mean D-Cinema , there is no real competing standards there ..
you can use either existing DTS theater playback (DTS6D or 6AD) or the new DTS HD10 , or you can use uncompressed audio (standard d-cinema playback is 8 -12 channels uncompressed (possable) or you can use ac3 compressed (home type) if there is suitable CAT card installed in the dolby proccessor ..
we all of these except ac3 ... mostly DTS off an outboard 6AD"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
client/ server side D-Cinema would be pretty well be just ac3 ...
if a chain adoptes that method of delivery .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Part of the problem is DTS isn't as widely used in the US as in Asia. Nearly every Asian dvd comes with both formats. But it is rare for US dvd's to carry both.
DTS does offer a "fuller" sound over DD5.1. -
I know the DTS people very well and do a lot of commercial work with DTS -- and they tell me if there are a lot of Asian dvd's with DTS , they sure are not getting paid ....

I talked about it with them before -- we have found a lot of disks also that are marked DTS , don't have DTS tracks on them ..

What is DTS status with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD ?
I've missed the whole audio debate around these "standards" -
it will be on both optional - same status as on DVDs

DTS is one of the big selling points with me. I have never returned a DTS labeled DVD for that reason.
I can't comment on DTS music, I mainly buy dvd's.
