Hello does this player support XVIDs in res 960x528 or higher like 1280x544 also can it play ac3 5.1 on xvid files too?

Dn't know about those resolutions but i know it can play 5.1 AC3 in avi files, take note though, I don't actually use my player to decode the audio, it just passes it through to my receiver which decodes it but my guess is that it will work fine if you use the DVD player to decode AC3 audio.

I'm anxious to know the same thing as I have several episdoes of Lost in that resolution I'd like to try out. I've asked for this player for christmas, so after this Saturday I'll let you know how it goes!

I am very skeptical that this player can play high resolution Xvid/DivX files. There is no evidence at all to suggest that it can. It should be able to handle AC3 in Xvid from what I have read. I have the player, but all my DivX files use MP3, so I have no way to test AC3 in it, but it should work.

Basically this is what someone said:

Your HD files are DivX HD? I've tried it and it dosen't work (I get half a picture and only half the scan lines) I don't believe there are any HD DVD players yet as there is no standard yet.

So I think the best you can do is reencode those HD files down to 720x480 anamorphic. It won't be HD but it'll be sharper than the lower res divx encodes.

I just tried 1280x544 on a DVD-r and a Cd-r,Player says "RESO NOT SUPPORTED" didnt try 960x528. It did see the files on there,just wouldnt play it. I'll keep testing this.

I'm not sure about the resolution, but I encode at a maximum width of 640. It might support 720, but then again, you might get some minor problems, like synch between audio and video. I definitely wouldn't go beyond 720.

Also, I had an AC3 file and it goes out of synch with the video over time. After a few minutes it gets so bad (½ second) it's annoying. I think it only supports a certain amount of bitrate (audio+video) and high audio bitrate like AC3 files cause synching problems.

If I encode I use autoGK with ESS support and xvid 1.02. I set maximum width at 640 and CBR at 80kbs. This works for me.

Any XviDs over 720 wide wouldn't play (get the same Res not supp).

Just to clarify that when I posted about the AC3 problems I had above, that was for an AC3 file that was 5 channels with a CBR of 448kb/s. The video was 640x336 with 1246 kb/s. So it required a little more than the DVD player could handle. It played fine, looked and sounded great, but after a couple of minutes you would notice the desynching of the video and audio which just got worse as time went on. I think it's best to keep the audio below 256kbs and preferably around 80-128kbs.

I read a manual for Div-x certified JVC player, and it said max. resolution support for DivX was 720 and max for mpeg4 (xvid) was 640. It also suggested using 128 kbs for audio. I would think these are similar for the Philips DVP642. Maybe you can play files at 800+ resolution, but remember that most TV screens only have a resolution of 480 lines (not sure if this is the smaller of 640X480) and therefore most people don't need anything bigger than 640.

Cool player but i don't think its worth $249 USD.....you could buy an XBOX for that much and it will pretty much do everything that player can...im just hoping the DVP-642 will play HD XVID files either outa the box or with a firmware upgrade

Hello, just got this player...early christmas present . I have tested some movies and episodes and the ones in 960x544 didn't work. but ones in 540x??? work perfectly...I was wondering if there is a guide i could follow to convet the 960x544 res to 720x480 so I can play them in my player.
