  1. I have about 400 *.avi files on my computer, all of which used to play fine. Now, all of the sudden when I play them in either windows media player or windows media player 2 all I get is audio, and no video.

So, I uninstalled all my xvid and divx codecs, went and downloaded the latest versions of said codecs, and then installed them....... I'm getting the same thing, audio with no video.

If you have run into this problem before or know how to fix it, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    papaholmz

Have you installed any codec "packs" lately? That's where there are several codecs all installed at the same time. These things are notorious around here for screwing up people's systems.
Uninstall *all the codecs you do not need and do not use (I'd wipe them all completely and then reinstall xvid and divx again). Then only add new codecs as needed.

I can't give you much advice except to give up on Windows Media Player and try something like VLC media player. It uses it's own codecs. If it doesn't work, you have a serious codec problem. If it does, you just have a codec problem.

Could it be that they might be DivX 3 or something ? You might need an older DivX codec to play them.

https://www.videohelp.com/play.htm#identify will tell you specifically what codec you need to play them. Chances are that same codec is under codecs in the tools section here
    If in doubt, Google it.
