  1. I'm trying to create a DVD from some AVI clips I downloaded. I've never had a problem doing this with other formats, but I can't seem to do it with AVI's.

First I tried Ulead DVD Move Factory, and got this error when I tried to add a clip:

    MyMovie.avi is not accessible
Then I tried using Windows Movie Maker (came with my new XP machine) and got this error:

The file F:\Downloads\MyMovie.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Download Codecs Automatically is checked, and I've rebooted many times since my first attempt at this. It doesn't seem to try to download anything.

Now here's the kicker: The avi files play just fine in Windows Media Player (10). Is it safe to assume that it's not a codec issue since I can play them in WMP? If not, where do I get this codec thingy?

Identify what codec you need, then go to the tools section and download/install it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

That only works for codecs that Microsoft likes. It won't work for codecs like Divx and Xvid. Follow jimmalenko's advice...

  4. I am using the ACEMCP593PRO.exe codec pack and I have not had any problems with any .avi files.

Just do a search for this file on your file sharing program to find it, install it, and there you go problems should be gone........

    Peace

    Heh, ok...

Do not install any codec packs. Download Gspot and open your .AVIs with it. Gspot will tell you which codec you need. You will then have to download and install only the single codec that you need to play the video.

Telling someone to install codec packs is like telling them to format and reinstall Windows when Explorer changes itself to details view instead of list.
