it is a good idea overall -- but i feel sorry for the few people there that have been unfairly branded (usually out of a nasty divorce thing) or (in SOME cases) engaged in mutual sex with unknown under age (i mean 16ish - not little kids) when of the same general age ...
overall - though , great idea ... though 50 names in the same area code would make me feel paranoid for my kids --
wonder what this will do to home prices in certain areas ? think about that"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
i got 31 in my area.. and i live in a small area. i have a young teenage daughter.. damn

So I backtracked and went to meganslaw.com and hit this site..
http://www.nationalalertregistry.com/index5.shtml?source=overture&kw=megans_law
typed in my zipcode and there are two offenders in my neighborhood but it will cost me $10.00 to find out who they are.... what a bunch of bullshit this is.

if they can get the info -- you should be able to get it also somehow (for free)

Texas has had a mandatory registry for years now. Whenever a sex offender moves they have to notify the local police department and update their information with the state. I have one in my neighborhood, just convicted and another one that the police suspect. Unfortunately they haven't been able to nail this guy. I feel fortunate enough that I have two police officers on my block that keep an eye out on the neighborhood and keep me up to speed about my neighborhood. The one they suspect lives right across the street from a new child development school. I bet the principal, teachers and parents are not aware of this. I feel like sticking a sign in his front yard late at night so the parents will notice. Maybe the slimebag would move then.
All I know if he comes near my daughter, I will end up in jail for some time. -

Sheessh ...only 13 .....sad, very sad that 13 sex offenders in a zip code would be referred to as "only" :P -
Cap - Dr. DOS's post was for Natioal Registry. I used Meganslaw. It gave names/adresses. No charge.
Thing about where I live is that it is 1 zipcode for the entire town. Plus, our town is full of back-woods, inbred (pardon me northie) "cricket fuckers".
Still, 42 out of 35,000 is really scary! -

Now that you explained your town, I'm pretty sure that our zip code doesn't encompass nearly that many people ...I'd say maybe half that number ....so it's 13 instead of 21 per 17,000 for the same rate as you. Not too much difference given the small numbers
A larger number would be more meaningful for comparisons ...but I'd rather not have a buncha pervs moving in just for statistic's sake -

a lot of these though are not what some would call sex offenders .. keep that in mind about the numbers ...
in texas i see gays are on the list - because they are gay i guess (it is still not legal there)
taking a piss behind a bush in the park gets you listed in some places ..
making out w/ your girlfriend in the car will get you listed if caught ....
also - in some places being busted as a john ...
and for the other reasons i mentioned above .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Well two of those things I've done. I'm not saying which two, though.
Scary I could have been busted as a "sex offender" for seemingly innocent stuff
But I wonder how many were actually convicted of taking a leak in the park, and listed on the registry? It's probably safer to assume they're some schoolyard raincoat weenie-wagger ....since in this day and age it'd be too easy to get someone acquitted of relieving themselves behind a bush at an unfortunate time -
I honestly did look for anyone in my area that even remotely looks like me before posting in this thread!
You never know.

etc etc ... seems like most states have it ...
i see in michigan that some teens may have thier names removed or on there for only 10 years instead of the normal 25 ..
as i said before -- a lot of 'sex offenders' are not really sex offenders in the true sense .. a couple of 16 year old kids get busted by thier parents -- their name gets listed in almost every state for 25 years ..
Teenagers who have sex with minors close to their own age will not have their names on Michigan’s sex offender registry, thanks to a bill passed Tuesday by state lawmakers.
The Senate voted 36-0 to allow some teens to petition to leave their names off the public sex offender list. The House voted 101-9 to approve the bill.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm is expected to sign the bill into law, spokeswoman Liz Boyd said.
But critics say the bill does not help teens whose names are already on the public list. The new law would exempt anyone convicted after Oct. 1 of having sex with a minor within three years of their own age. But the only recourse for those teens who already are on the registry is to petition the court to reduce their time on the list from 25 to 10 years.
“So, this is just public humiliation for 10 years, instead of 25,” said Linda Zimmerman of Grand Haven, who has worked to get the law changed. “I am really disappointed in what happened (Tuesday).”
Michigan law currently requires the names of juveniles convicted of criminal sexual conduct to be on the registry once they turn 18. If signed by Granholm, the new law would exempt teenagers who had sex with someone with no more than three years’ age difference, as long as the act was nonviolent and the offenders are not considered predators.
State Rep. Andy Meisner, D-Ferndale, called the legislation “a step in the right direction.”
Michigan lawmakers created the sex offender registry in 1994 to allow police to keep tabs on potential predators in their communities. The list also allows investigators to have a ready-made list of suspects in sex crimes.
The list became public in 1996 and was posted on the state’s Web site three years later.
Zimmerman, who co-founded Citizens for Second Chances, a group working to change the laws, said listing teenagers who had sex with consenting partners makes it difficult for people to know who the real predators are.
“There are 34,000 people on the list. You can’t tell me there are that many sexual predators in Michigan,” Zimmerman said.

weird enough (maybe they read this forum) , canada will have one (there is one already in ontario)
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY
OTTAWA, December 15, 2004 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, announced today the implementation of the new national sex offender registration system.
"The implementation of the National Sex Offender Registry reflects a consensus reached with provincial and territorial partners to establish a nation-wide sex offender registration system, and is another demonstration of the Government of Canada's commitment to enhance public safety and security -- especially for children," said Minister McLellan.
The cornerstone of the sex offender registry is the new National Sex Offender Database, which is maintained by the RCMP. The information in the database will only be accessible by accredited law enforcement agencies and serves more than 60,000 law enforcement officials in every province and territory.
The sex offender database will allow police to conduct a search according to a full or partial address and the offence of a sex offender or both. Offence information and registration information will be included, as well as other pertinent identification information such as tattoos and other distinguishing marks.
"This tool will assist police officers in the identification of possible sex offender suspects known to reside near the offence site. This capability will serve the immediate needs of police officers responding to serious incidents of a sexual nature," added Minister McLellan.
Convicted offenders will have to register within 15 days following a court order for registration or release from custody. They will be required to re-register annually and within 15 days of a change of residence.
They will also be obligated to provide local police with information such as addresses and telephone numbers, names and alias (es) and identifying marks and tattoos. Penalties will be provided for failing to comply with a registration order or for not giving truthful information.
The sex offender registry reflects an agreement reached with provincial and territorial ministers in late 2003, and is part of the Federal Government's ongoing commitment to reform the Criminal Code and protect the safety and security of Canadians. The Government of Canada will conduct a two-year review of the legislation."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
but in canada - due to canada having some rights still (a few) - the public can't go through the database - only police ..
