    Greetings,

I'm thinking of building a site/service that would help people automate DVD encoding and I wanted some feedback on the concept.

The idea would be an online database, sort of like CDDB, but instead of just track / album / artist info for specific CDs, the database could provide detailed info on the audio and video streams (like the output of DGIndex) and user contributed Avisynth scripts for specific DVDs.

I'm very impressed by the current generation of encoding software (MEGUI, Handbrake, StaxRip, etc), but it seems like they all require a fair amount of hand tuning, especially when the DVD source requires cleanup (detelecining, deinterlacing, fixing artifacts / edge enhancements) using Avisynth scripts. If the DVD specific configuration/scripting could be pulled into these tools from an online database, the whole process might be much more automatable for experts and usable for newbies.

Do you think it might work? Would it be useful? To be successful, users would have to contribute data / scripts and tool developers would have to include support for it. I'm not sure if either group would be interested.

    Thanks,

    - CBass

Sounds like a good idea to me, although you would obviously have to push the fair use angle to avoid attention from the movie studios.
    If in doubt, Google it.
