  1. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

I have a home movie on DVD and want to edit the contents on adobe premiere pro 1.5 with little or no loss in quality. I've been reading around and playing with a few things but want to see if i'm on the right track.

At the moment I'm demuxing the DVD with DVD decryptor and then creating an AVI with Virtualdub MOD using the panasonic DV codec. this seems to work fine but the AVI files are quite large. is there a better way to achive the same results?

Results would have been much better starting with a MiniDV camcorder.
I realize that is no longer an option for you.

Premiere Pro will only work properly in DV format.

If you have the bucks ($250), Main Concept has a Mpeg add-in for Premier Pro that allows direct Mpeg2 editing.

If you are looking at high volumes, this could be a good investment for you.

I saw this at NAB, it's very fast, just like editing in DV, and probably yields better quality if your input is compatible MPeg2.

If you edits are simple cuts and joins, and not fancy transitions, look at something like Womble mpegVCR or similar. It is designed for editing mpeg, and if the edits are cuts and not cross fades etc, then the footage does not have to be recompressed at a risk of quality loss.

Demux them back to native mpeg. There are a number of tools that can do this, including IFOEdit.

  8. IFOEdit looks very complicated to me. and i'm not sure how i would create a mpg with it. I have already demuxed with dvddecryptor i just need to put them together so i can edit them in premiere.

There should be big red warning labels on these DVD Camcorders and DVD Recorders.
"Not intended for computer editing. Edit or reauthor at your own risk."

  11. VideoReDo will easily edit and join DVD VOB or mpeg files without any re-encoding needed. You can then re-author using your favorite authoring program (make sure that the program does not re-encode compliant DVD VOB or mpeg files).
