  1. I have a sony 4x dvd burner. I been using memorex or TDK 4x dvd+R's. Everything had been working fine, till I bought the new memorex 8x Dvd+R's. now it just wouldn't work. I have upgraded the firmware, and It worked a few times, and now it stoped working again. I went to best buy, and the guy told me that If I have a 4x burner. .there is no way that a 8x Dvd's will work. . But if that is the case, how come it worked a few times. Please help me. . thank you

Does this mean that it is not safe to assume that 8X DVD-Rs are compatible with 4X recorders (Pioneer 105)?l

The speed rating on a DVD is the maximum, they can always be burned at a lower speed.

  4. Well, I also have always assumed that a particular media should be able to be burned at its rated speed or lower. But something has gone radically awry in the transition from 4x to 8x media. My Sony DRU-510A has been burning just fine - using mostly Ritek G04 and TDK 4x media. I picked up a stack of Ritek G05 8x media - and the drive wants no part of them. I contacted Sony and their answer is to stick with the media listed on their site for the drive. The only problem is - they are all 4x and slower media, which isn't even available in this area anymore for most of the brands. Naturally Sony brand media was on the top of the list (which is the worst performing media I ever tried on this drive). Ritek isn't even listed and G04 media has been my most reliable media. Is this drive trash once all the G04 media (and other brand 4x media) in the supply line is gone?
Are all our dvd burners that are only around a year old going to be obsolete because the manufacturers can't be bothered keeping updated firmware available? If that is Sony's attitude - this is the last Sony burner that will ever be in my system.

  5. You might have to update your firmware to get these new DVD-Rs to work properly on a older burner

I purchased some FUJI DVD-R 8x media that Best Buy had on sale to try in my Pioneer (Cendyne) 105. I tried one last night that burned at 4x, verified without error, and played fine in all 4 DVD players that I tried. It is interesting that some media is simply marked "8X" (Memorex) while others are marked "up to 8X" (FUJI). Does anyone know whats going on?

Like stiltman say's, update to latest fimware.

My 3-year old 2.4x burner has no problems at all burning the 8x media out there. Many times new firmware is created for compatabilty issues with new media.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

  8. The most current firmware available for the Sony DRU-510A is version 1.1A, which is what is in my drive.
When I inquired with Sony about the problem, their answer is to only use the media listed on their "compatibility" chart. Of course all that media is 4x or slower speed rated, and is not or will not be available at all much longer.
Someone referred to this as an "older" drive. It is about a year old and was the most current drive available from Sony when I purchased it. I sure hope "planned obsolescence" for dvd burners is more than a year.
I fully believe this is a Sony firmware issue.
Sony needs to put out an updated 510A firmware to support the currently available media. If I have to buy a new drive because this drive will not work with 8x media and Sony doesn't address it, it will be the last Sony computer product I ever buy, that's for sure.

I checked out the pioneer web site, and the 105 claims to be compatible with all 8x and 16x media (at 4x burn). Bummer about the Sony...

  11. From what I have read, Sony uses oem suppliers now - mostly Lite-On and Optorite, but did not initially. As far as I have been able to determine - the 510a is actually and really a Sony drive (the last one actually designed and made by them). And maybe therein lies the problem - they can't rely on an oem supplier to develop updated firmware, so they are leaving their 510a customers in the lurch, as 4x media disappears. I have a fresh batch of Ritek G04 media - and all is working well again - until I run out!

  12. Have a search on google you may be able to find a hacked firmware that will let you burn the media. If you can't buy any more 4x media it won't matter about invalidating the waranty.

I used the 2x for all hack for the pioneer 104 and never had a problem with new media but they are good at keeping their drives up to date anyway.

  13. I myself suspect the media youare using in your drive, My 510A is still running 1.0f firmware and I have burned at least 3 brands of 8x media with no problems. Right now I'm using TDK 8X +R for more important things and Teon 8X -R ($5 for 20 on sale) for less important things that I only want to hold til I can get around to watching them. No problems here. I've been seeing bad things about Riteks here on the board.

    Good Luck

  14. Thanks for the tip. I've never seen Teon media, but I've had excellent results with TDK 4x DVD-R media, and just picked up a 50 stack of TDK 8x DVD-R media on sale here for $20, but have not opened it. When my Ritek G04's run out (which are working perfectly, as always), I'll give the TDK's a try and hope that the 510A can handle the -R media for me as well as yours handles the +R media for you.
You mentioned 3 brands of 8x media - what was the third and was it -R media also?

  15. 4X burner should be able to burn 8X discs. You'd better update firmware, ASPI and driver. Here is the link for ASPI http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/aspi.htm

I do not have any problem burning different brands ( FUJI, MEMOREX, TDK & RITEK ) 8X DVD-R with my 1+ years old Sony DRU-510A.
As per Jusanhu's suggestion, you should update firmware, ...

  17. Well, my Sony 510A has firmware 1.1A in it - and as best I can determine, that is as new as it gets.
What firmware are you running that permits you to burn successfully to Ritek 8x G05 DVD-R media?
Is there a newer firmware for this drive than 1.1A?
