I'm pretty much out of space, and the thought of spending another $250 for an external hard drive is bothering me.. so I'm wondering if I'm just being a weirdo by insisting on having all of my DVDs saved on my hard drive (to prevent losing it on a damaged or deteriorated DVD).

I just started storing mine on hard drives. Previously just on dvdr. Why spen $250 for 1 hard drive? I have bought 2-160GB & 1-200GB for around $130. Then just buy a cheap external case for them from newegg.com

Not sure why it would be safer on a HD. If a disc goes bad you lose one disk worth of stuff. If a full hard drive goes bad you could loss 50 (or more) disks worth of stuff.

Optical media is more reliable than a hard drive. Just don't buy crap, and take care of it.

Another side effect is it's easier to burn off a HD. I don't actually have a DVD-ROM, but I just bought a Pioneer 108 though, so I could use my A04 as a DVD-ROM.

I keep my masters on a dedicated HDD. I also keep a burned dvd copy as a back up incase that HDD ever failed.

I burn Masters on DVD-R. I also keep ISO files on one of my external drives for quick burns.

When I have masters that absolutely have to be kept, I burn them to TDK Armor Plated DVDs. They are good quality, burn wise, and almost completely unscratchable.

I also offer this as an aditional service to clients. It would be nice to have a huge disk array that could hold of this stuff, but it just isn't financially practical for yet.

Your HDD will certainly be dead before good burned media kept at correct conditions.

Thanks for all the replies.. guess I'm going to have to switch over. I used to hear all of these theories about how DVD-Rs were found to deteriorate in as quickly as a year. I'm using only the best quality media TY02, so I guess that's no longer (or never was) a problem.

Some poor quality disks may well cause issues over time. Some poorly manufactured studio releases had problems because air/moisture git in between the layers. Nothing is 100% guaranteed.
