  3. YadeX is a strong ripping tool for OSX 10.3.x. And it's a free application.

There is a file named "About YadeX.rtf" inside the folder, with all the English instructions to use it.

  4. Nice, seems like a minor update but I really like the visual previews of this ripper.

The changelog for 0.98b roughly translates to:
    • Fixes a bug where YadeX would unexpectedly quit
    • Improvements in the extraction of DVDs with atypical structures, particularly with certain DVD-RW burners

The general info translates roughly to:
    • Requires MacOS X [version unspecified]
    • Works on internal and external DVD drives, i.e. IDE, SCSI, USB and FireWire, as well as mounted disk images
    • Displays a hierarchical view of the DVD's structure (tracks, menus, chapters, scenes, cells and objects)
    • Displays timecode data
    • Displays preview images
    • Can extract DVDs as a disk images, like DVDExtractor in MacOS 9 or OSEx in OS X
    • Uses the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, if installed, for better performance [in previewing]
    • Open source
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

"Can extract DVD as a disk image" for me it's the most important option of Yade X.

Using this option i'm able to rip the DVDs which ripping fails (a very few) using MTR2.

And after i'm able to work the YadeX mounted image on my desktop using DVD2One.

Changelog for 0.99b translates roughly to:
    • Improves the extraction speed of streams, VOBs and disk images; especially noticeable on drives which have had their full ripping speed unlocked by the use of modified firmware
    • Improved interface to make the use of selection rectangles more intuitive

Sweet. I'm still a die hard Yade user. The Preview option just can't be beat.

That's slated for a possible future version of MTR... but I agree, YadeX is a great ripper, when it works. I find DVD compatibility to be a little lacking though. Geezer took a look at the source a while ago to see if he could do anything with it, but unfortunately, it's a CodeWarrior project, which he doesn't have, and some of it is C++ if memory serves (might be wrong about that, as it doesn't always), which he isn't very familiar with. There was even talk of merging MTR and YadeX at one point, but the codebases are too different, with YadeX also being Carbon, and MTR an Xcode Obj-C Cocoa project. It's good to have some friendly competition too, as in the end, the users win with more alternatives. Interface-wise, Yade has always been excellent. MTR might get there someday, but for certain functions, YadeX is the ripper of choice, compatibility-permitting. It's definitely ready for the 1.0 release, I'd say...

:P For what I do, MTR is ideal. For extracting chapters, scenes, cells, etc., Yade has always had a good interface, and previewing is well-implemented. I think if we have chapter selection as a checklist in a new drawer, plus add previewing at some point in the (distant?) future, the interface will be just as good for those tasks as well. For doing Full Disc extractions (which is the only mode I use), MTR is just a one-click proposition, which is perfect, plus it has the best compatibility of all the rippers on the Mac. YadeX still has its place for those doing certain types of extraction, though (for now). Plus, it's always good to have alternatives in case one doesn't work or a project gets shut down.

  13. The preview is mainly what keeps YADE on my computer. It does an excellent jop of grabbing stills.
