This weekend will be the first time I author a DVD of material captured direct to MPEG-2 using my ATI capture-capable card.
I plan to:
Edit out commercials using VideoRedo
Import the edited material as elemental streams into DVD-Lab to author
I understand that the audio in the MPEG-2 file from the initial capture will be an mp2 file. How critical is it to demux, convert the audio to AC3, then re-mux?
These are cartoons that will be viewed by my daughter on our DVD player (which can handle the mp2 - I'm pretty sure) and on a laptop in the car during long trips. Each disc will have 6 or 7 half hour episodes on them and converting to AC3 will make the process longer. I really don't want to convert them to AC3, unless you guys can convince me otherwise.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Don't worry about it. My hauppauge wintv pvr250 captures in mp2 and my dvd players handle it perfectly.
Only very old dvd players may not like it if it doesn't also have an additional ac3/lpcm track.
I'd say don't bother converting it to ac3. MP2 is just fine

(or do a test on a rewritable disc to confirm your destination dvd player likes mp2 audio)

Yes, I've authored with both DVD-Lab and TMPGEnc DVD Author, using PVR250 mpgs as source material (system stream) without any probs. I'd use DVDAuthorGUI, but then, I'm required to demux first, which seems like a redundant step, at least for quick record/author/watch/erase kindof DVDs...
