Hello,
I'm tryign to convert .AVI to .MPG with TMPGENC. I load up th e.AVI in question and it appropriately adds in the file for the audio. The problem is when I convert it runs through the process but won't convert the sound. In addition to this it adds about two hours of nothign to the end of the file.
After all is done I'm basically left with 4 hours of soundless movie. Has anyone seen this and does anyone know how to fix it?
The strange part is that I ahve made several movies this way before and only recently have started having this problem.
Thanks in advance
AJ

Sounds like the audio has been compressed as a VBR-MP3. Tmpgenc sometimes get lost with these.
Try loading the avi into VirtualDubMod. You will probably get an dialogue telling you there is an incorrect VBR header or similar. Click OK. Set Audio to full processing, then save the audio out as an uncompressed wav file. Load this into tmpgenc in place of the original avi audio and encode.Read my blog here.

Thanks for the response. The problem I'm having (after looking through a VirtualBub guide) is that it won't allow me to save it as a .wav.
When I load the file I direct the program to re-write the header and that is fine. The problem I have is when I go to "SAVE AS" it will only let me save it as an .avi (which the file is already in .avi format). Is this correct? Is this part of the process? If not can you point out what went wrong? I'm using the latest version of VirtualDubMod so I don't see why I'd have this problem.
Thanks again,

I have only used vdub mod a few times (normally just use the regular vdub) but I think you have to do this from the streams menu.

Load the original AVI in GoldWave, save wav. Use wav as audio source, original avi as video source. Don't rewrite the header - that will only mess things up. You could also do this with VirtualDub, but it's more complicated to explain (and do). If you feel like it, do as Bugster suggests above.

Hello again guys. Thanks again for the responses and thigns worked a bit better.
I converted the audio to a .wav file after a bit of struggling using virtualdub, which worked fine. Then I converted to .mpeg using TMPGEnc. So I got a finished product that was nearly perfect, my only problem was the synchro of the audio and the video. It was off by about a second and a half.
Can anyone just give me a quick rundown of the process (and tools) to sync it up? Also is it better to do soemthing BEFORE the .mpeg is made or is it better to sync it up AFTERWARDS?
Thanks again

Before. Sync problems are the down side of separating the AVI audio. Simple solution is to add some silence at the start of the wav (1.5 s i your case) - but there is setting in TMPGEnc too, audio delay or something, somewhere, where you can compensate for this kind of sync issue.
