    Hello,

The rock thread inspired this. Ok what's your favorite decade for music?

Mine would probably be the 80's. Gotta love it. (though Roxette was mainly 90's for US released material so that would be a close second).

    The 80's

    Each song was unique.

Today every song sounds the same.

I can't vote because I think it's the ten years from 1965 to 1975 and that includes the '60s and '70s

Same boat I'm in. Although I mostly listen to music from the late sixties, seventies, and 80s. I would have to pick 70s because of all the rock albums I own; although I am sure most of the music made in the 70s was poppy crap.

The 90s with few exceptions was exceptionally gay. The 2000s are also too horrible to mention (except for underground extreme metal of course ) Rap may have very well ruined popular music.

Yup, rap has ruined music. 70s music is my fav right now. Disco rocks. Plus all the love songs of that day are hot.

    110% agree...

Of course, we discussed this in other threads. No need to rehash, but the best music came out of those decades, from the Beatles to BTO, by far we had the best soundtrack to our lives of anyone in the last 100 years. I feel sorry for kids today, they have to listen to what the radio gives them, homogenized pop.

I agree with 888888, rap (c-rap!) has ruined what's left of popular music, though it was going downhill before rap arrived on the scene.

At least in the 80's there were still some interesting bands around, but by the 90's, rock was dead. R.I.P.

the only good bands in the early 90's were metallica, megadeth, and pantera. up until the late 90's at least, then stuff started getting good again. but those glam bands of the 80's did nothin but piss me off and dont get me started on that retro crap either....

1980's was definitely the most unique decade of the last century. And the music was great too. Queen, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Erasure, George Michael, Modern Talking, Bad Boys Blue, Alan Parsons Project, Sting, Elton John, Yello. Even Michael Jackson had some great stuff, my favourite being "Bad".

Also, there was a very short period between 1989 and 1993 that was musically really neither 80's nor 90's, but something completely different, very stylish and promising. Unfortunately it all died with the introduction of the crappy alternative rock and an awful rap evolution. I actually used to like early 90's rap (like M.C. Hammer's first album), but when rap got dirty it ruined itself.

What saved the 90's for me was the techno and europop music. Everything else was pretty boring and pathetic. Good rock music was virtually non-existent. The stuff I liked from the 90's: Army Of Lovers, E-Type, Vacuum, Ace Of Base, E-Rotic, Delerium and a few other mostly europop and techno acts. And of course all those artists that I liked in the 80's that were still making music.

Nowadays, when I look for the new music to listen to, I find myself listening to non-traditional stuff, like ethnic and new age. Again a lot of that stuff has some great melodies and rhythms and is a great substitute for today's mainstream crap. To name a few: Afro Celt Sound System, Quinn, MacDowell & Krell, Jean Michel Jarre, Denez Prigent, Mars Lasar, Enigma, Era, Vangelis, Aria, Secret Garden, Yanni (yes Yanni, he's got some interesting stuff too).

By the way, I am myself a professional classical pianist. Though I also play for a lot of musicals . And when we have parties after the shows, I often improvise on some of the music that I mentioned above and many of the actors come around and sing their throats out :P .
