divx dvd-players...

I just discovered the philips divx player today, the $70 one, and just placed an order. Just curious, is there any special way you have to burn them? I'm used to authoring VCD's and such, everything has to be converted etc. Is it as simple as dragging the file onto the cd and clicking burn?

Also, I've heard reports of DVD-R support, and just curious, could you drag 4 or 5 movies onto 1 disc? Is there some sort of menu you could select the movies from? Thanks, long live divx!!

yes you can just put an mpg or avi and burn it as a data disc and it will work most of the time (avi's will not play if encoded with qpel). yes you can put several movies on a dvd, and yes there is a menu to choose your movie from.

Yes, you can burn multiple DivX files to DVD+-R discs and they will work. Subtitles need to be SRT format or you will probably have problems, although in theory a couple of other formats are supported. QPel won't work at all, GMC is only supported in the newest firmware. If you did anything odd with your audio, like used OGG or AAC, it probably won't work. The player works fine for DivX as long as you don't deviate from what it expects.

i had one question about audio on divx, because i have a home-theater setup at home with dolby digital / DTS. i saw divx's can use AC-3 for audio encoding...thats dolby digial right? do most people encode their movies with AC-3?

Yes, AC3 is Dolby Digital, and yes the DVP-642 plays it just fine. I don't know about DTS, but it will probably pass that through to a DTS decoder if you have one. The player doesn't have on-board DTS decoding as far as I know.

I consider this player to be among the coolest things I've ever bought. I think you'll be very happy with it. It has no problem with AC3, MP3 (CBR), or MP3 (VBR) audio. SVCDs, VCDs, and even un-authored MPGs and VOB files will play fine. I don't even bother making SVCDs anymore. I just drop the MPG to a DVD and play it on the Philips.

My only real complaint is that the subtitles it produces are rather small and have no outlining and are thus very hard to read.

I love my 642, although it still doesn't handle most Xvid movies very well, even with latest FW
