Dad Dies Of Heart Attack After Accidentally Shooting & Killing Son At Deer Feeder

Man Apparently Thought Son Was Deer

    10:47 pm EST November 29, 2004

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. -- A father accidentally shot and killed his son at a deer feeder and then died of a heart attack, authorities said Monday.

The Medical Examiner's Office in Jacksonville confirmed that Ronald McKenna Jr., 33, died from what appeared to be an accidental gunshot wound. His father, Ronald McKenna Sr., 54, died of a heart attack.

The younger McKenna went into the woods on Thanksgiving Day near Keystone Heights to check on a deer feeder, Clay County sheriff's spokeswoman Mary Justino said. His father saw movement around the feeder that he reportedly thought was a deer. He fired one shot, killing his son. The elder McKenna then suffered a fatal heart attack.

Justino said the investigation continued, but investigators believed there was no evidence of foul play.

Like a heart attack was the father's planned suicide attack after plotting to shoot his son. Come on. What the heck do they need to do an investigation for. The family of these 2 are probably devastated over the incident. Let alone the father who freaked out once he realized he shot his son.

Now that's a f**ked up Thanksgiving. And I've heard women complaining their day turned out bad because the turkey was too dry and they ran out of cranberries. I have this to say to women like that:

If I had shot my own son like that, I think I'd write a note to my wife explaining it first, then I'd crawl up my own ass and die.

I completely understand. Losing a son is bad enough, but being the cause of it .... Yep ...I'd die too ...the sooner the better

I can see you making headlines everywhere for crawling up your own ass. :P

Let's hope I never have to prove that I could indeed do it in that situation

Knowing myself, I'd die before I made it near the hole.

  7. It's too sad for words.

This guy was not a hunter. The deer feeder means he was baiting- like on the ultra expensive "canned" hunts. Needless to say, it's not considered "fair chase", even where legal.

To fire at movement without positively identifying the target leads to things like this. It's the first thing pounded into kids' heads at hunter safety classes. Such courses are now mandatory in nearly all states to get your first hunting license.

NY state doesn't allow shooting near feeders. If caught, you can be fined a hefty sum. You can only baity an area with urine and decoys. And there are strict regulations on them as well. But always identify before firing, even if it means losing the deer.

  9. Yes. I'm not familiar with Florida regulations, but I thought wearing "hunter orange" was required nationwide now for firearms season (?) Camo is okay for bowhunting, but the range is very short.

I'm going to suggest this incident be read to the students at the next hunter safety course at the club. Maybe on the second day of class when they can easily tell you the mistakes that were made. Such things sober up the eager new hunters.

Baiting? Bah, it's like the "hunts" millionaire bozos go on. Fenced area, they get escorted from one bait station to the next.

I always just spent time reading books on a tree stand along some known deer trails. Always gave me time to think and relax. When I hear or see a deer I shoot it. many times I was just bow hunting, but it's fine when with a gun. No baiting involved. A little more sporting and follows a bit of what the actual term hunting is.

Me too, until my ass got too cold, couple hours, tops. :P It's fun to sneak and peek also. How some guys could bear to be up a tree all day is beyond me.

I wouldn't all day. I'd get too bored. about 2 or 3 hours every other day is fine. I had a little Coleman flameless heater with me.

I could see it ....it gets 'em away from the wife all day, and they get to carry a gun. Throw a few beers into that, and ... where do I sign up?

It's also too stupid for words as well in a way. Not to sound mean in any way but....there is a lot of stupidity in this world....and a lot of it DEMANDS that it be able to carry a gun around the woods at certain times each year along with quite a lot of other stupidity armed as much or even more than they are.

    "Gosh darnit...I'm goin' huntin'".....

Hunting is the best way to get rid of stupid people and have fun doing it. You can invite someone you really don't like stating that you want to make amends and then . And nobody will think you did it intentionally because you were doing what you can to be friends.

My friend came up with a cool idea. We always wanted to get a store mannequin....dress him up in ORANGE hunting garb and strap him to the hood of my truck (which was cammo'd by the way).
When someone would ask what that was all about we would reply "I don't see what the problem is....there are hundreds of these things out running around in the woods".....

Maybe I'm alone in my hunting practices but last time I went hunting, I saw what I shot at before I pulled the trigger.

I feel bad for the family but it's not that ******* hard. Besides....deer hunting in florida is a joke isn't it?? How big are they? 80 lbs? I've had dogs bigger than that.

I could part the Red Sea with that thing though. That truck oozed an "I Don't Give A Shit" attitude and everyone moved for me. 1978 Ford F-150 4x4...31" tires (no lift kit required)....4 shocks up front(Bronco front end) and a Heavy Half suspension and axle on the back(almost 3/4 ton) done in complete cammo. 351M with a 4 barrel and a hand choke....."starts better than a Ford with a hand choke"...
And the fact that it was damn near indestructable....DAMN I miss that truck.....
All that and I lived nowhere near "The Country"....

on a side note.. i have a 1991 F-150 4X4 with 35x12.50 on mine with the 4 shocks up front no lift kit either. there is room for bigger tires but why? i love my truck.. BUT its all black haha.. i got rear ended by a rice burner at a light and the front of his car was totaled i had a gouge in the rubber trim on my bumper hahahaha..

I flattened an old Buick Electra 225 with my F-150. I was INSIDE his trunk. When I hit my brakes after I hit him....my truck "fell off" of the back of that old Buick. His trunk was folded in half...
I drove home and hosed that pesky white Buick paint off of my truck...
I would hate to see what that truck would have done to a small car. I love small cars too and own a Toyota Celica. Having owned that Ford I now know to stay the hell away from those F-150's....especially those older ones....OUCH.

Nice body and 5-speed on those early 90's models, but that was only 4-cyl. Wasn't it? after 85' they no longer did the oversized pistons on the celica. Sad. The 24R-E engines in the 80's models had nice torque. Still would have preferred a 6-cyl. though. 85' was the last year they made Celica as RWD. I miss doing donuts in my 84' GT.
