    I have that phillips 642 divx playher. Whenever I play divx, the movie starts out in rainbow colors and all blocky and pixely. If i push menu-exit it will resume playing normally, is this an encoding or firmware issue.

    I never noticed rainbow colors, but saw a little bit of pixelation RIGHT at the start (first 5 seconds), but then it' fine. Did u get the latest firmware?

    I have the problem of FF... whenever I FF, it loses the syn of audio/video. do u have this issue?

    @Greg12
    This is a well known issue and so far the only proposed solution is what you already do.
    No one has yet identified if it is an encoder option that the player has problems with or whether it will be resolved with firmware updates. I have downloaded the latest firmware which apparently allows the player to accept gmc but I haven't yet applied the patch so don't know if that will make a difference. The only files I got those symptoms with were a couple of tv shows which I missed and dl'd. Since they were encoded by someone else to xvid I don't know how they were done.
    At least it's fairly easy to get past the problem so while a bit of a pain it's not insurmountable. When it first happened I re-encoded the shows then someone posted the system/menu on and off option and it worked fine for me.
    cheers

    Is there any article (or forum) that gives some pointers about how to use this Philips DVP642 perfectly? Like the best media to use, best divX settings, what options to choose and what not, etc...

    Thnx

    I don't know of any forum but the player basically plays any divx/xvid except Qpel. The gmc issue has apparently been overcome with the latest firmware. I stay below 2600 kbs because the player chokes with much higher divx/xvid/mpeg4 bitrates and I usually encode the audio to mp3. I use a lot of Memorex DVD+RW 2.4 and 4x rated media for my divx and it plays them fine but that could also depend on your burner as well. Just do a forum search on the player and you'll see that many issues have been discussed here already. As far as detailed codec settings I just use basic 1 pass settings. I do very little multi pass re-encoding to divx since I use it mainly to play timeshifted tv caps.

    LOL. Timeshifted. Gotta luv the vernacular. Like walking on eggshells it seems.

    My 642 plays everything on any media right outta the box. Got it Monday afternoon (6 Dec) and I havnt had any probs that u mentioned. I even thru an mpeg1, xvid/divx/mp3 and mpeg2 on a dvdrw and all played fine.
    I just hate the funky remote. Plus the player wont let me fast fwd past 8x AND I cant do the 1 1/2 FF with audio when I Watch Scrubs. I like to hear the superman song in a quick chipmonk speed. lol

    So, what do u guys think is my problem? Whenever I fastforward it does that for a while and then skips to next track, it also loses the sync?!

    Is there any tool that can clean/fix divX files? I dont wanna recode all of it with virtual dub.
