  1. How long will it take to burn a whole DVD at 8X ?

    Hello,

    Do the math:

    15/2 = 7.5.

Should be about 7 to 8 minutes given simple math. Though of course buffer time and if you're doing anything else at the time may skew the numbers.

I have a 4x burner and it is about 15 minutes for 4x like you said. Though I usually buy cheaper 2x and wait the half hour to burn. No biggie.

  4. oh I thought it would be 2x as fast I almost bought some 8X DVD's but if I'm only saving a few minutes then I guess I will stick with 4x.

    Thanks for your reply.

The math is off because it does not burn at a full 8x the whole time.

    Hello,

Sorry. I assumed since the jump from 2x to 4x really is DOUBLE, I figured the same would hold for 4 to 8.

    Now I know.

    this is a true statement..

But it also depends on the burner.. if it uses P-CAV it will start at a lower speed like 6x and quickly jump to 8x and stay. that is the second fastest way to burn.. the slowest is CAV which will start at a low speed and slowly climb to 8x till its done.. it doesnt reach 8x until its almost done. then there is CLV which starts at 8 x and burns at that speed the whole way.. last way is Z-CLV which will burn at 2x for one zone then jump to 4x for another zone then end at 8x for last zone..
most all burners burn with all thoese operations its just a matter of at what speeds does the technique chagnge.. what you want is CLV at the highest speed possible.. next best is P-CAV worst or slowest being CAV.

that is one reason all burners take differnt times to complete burn..

a 8x burn at CLV will take 7min approx
    a 8x burn at P-CAV will take 7:30 approx
    a 8x burn at Z-CLV will take 7:45 approx
a 8x burn at CAV will take 8:00 + approx

these number are just a baseline to give you an idea ofthe time difference between the techniques. media also has a lot to do with the speed.. junk or "cheap" media will take longer to burn due to error correction etc.. an 8x burn with CLV and junk media can take 8:30 or more. this is all based on all things being perfect on computer.. other factors play a part too.. HD frag IDE cable being 80 or 40 pin master or slave. etc..

    hope this helps

In case you guys wanted to see a forumla

    1x speed is 1350Kb/s
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/toolkit/faq2.cfm

    Since a 4.7GB actually holds 4589844 Kb

    4589844Kb X (1 sec/1350KB) X (1min /60 sec)=7.08min

But burning the burning methods and computer specs affect the actual speed so you get longer burn times just like Heywould3 said
