  1. I am shopping for a new DVD writer, probably a LG or NEC.

Since they are both dual-layer burners, does this mean that I can backup a movie DVD without any editing ?

    Hello,

    Yep.

Just use dvd decrypter. ISO READ. Then open the iso file and use ISO WRITE.

It will be a 1:1 for a dual layer burner.

  3. yes! but dual layer discs are very expensive at the moment, costing about half the price of an original disc, so it's kinda not worth using them at the moment..

    DVDDecrypter ISO Read/ISO Write .....

... And plenty of cash to spend on media
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yes. DVD decrypter works fine, but I usually use AnyDVD (to defeat copy protection) and then just copy on-the-fly with Nero. It takes 20-25 minutes on Verbatim DL disks at 4x on my Pioneer 108. Either way works great.

The only drawback right now is the cost of the double layer media. It's coming down though. I bought my first DL disk 2-3 months ago for $13. I just got some more for $5-6 (after rebate). I'm really hoping to see them get down to around $2.

You could try my method, that doesn't involve buying software as it uses free software, until the price of DL media drops to a realistic level

It can use single or DL media, just choose different settings

I bought use the NEC 3500 and retired my Pioneer A05, simply because the reviews said it was the best for quality of burns, might not be the fastest, but I'd prefer quality over speed
