Since my standalone DVD player supports both minidvd and xvcd I want to know which one will have better quality from a DVD rip.
- A XVCD on 2 80min CDs at 1959kbit/s or
- A miniDVD on 2 80min CDs at 1697kbit/s
Thanx!

Well, since DVD is progressive...the XVCD is going to be better. Higher bitrate = better quality.

Ok, thanks! I'll be doing that...

better in what sense??..overall or just video??..overall I would say miniDVD because you get to retain the digital 5.1 surround sound...yes the Xvcd will have better picture FIDELITY, but quality is only something your eye can determine...personally have the digital sound makes up for the ~200-300 bps loss in video.
-
For those who value sound quality that highly (I personally recommend saving the bits for video unless you have a really nice stereo system, since the digital 5.1 isn't really going to sound much better when just played through something like TV speakers), it is advisable to do the miniDVD in MPEG1. MPEG2 will produce poor results at a bitrate as low as ~1600Kbps, so those extra 300Kbps are very significant.

thats true..but Id hope he would only do miniDVD for just that..if you dont have digital home theater systm like myself, then I wouldnt do miniDVD.

I don't have a home theater system, so I'll stick to XVCD. What if I try to make a miniDVD with just stereo sound at 224kbs/s. Will that work? Thanks

Well first you have to convert it to an ac3 stream, I think, off the top of my head, I dont believe DVD spec audio will accept anything else. But even if it does, why would you waste bits on a 224 mpeg stream, a 128 stream will sound just as good.

For playing on a TV I'd say the XVCD, mini DVD for anything really requires at least 3-4 CD's (it is DVD after all), and at that res the bitrate you want really wouldn't be enough. -

The DVD spec includes PCM and MPEG audio as valid formats. The DVD spec also includes MPEG1, so if you think about it, it would at least have to support MPEG audio. BTW, there is (or at least can be) a substantial difference between 128 and 224 Kbps when you're talking about MPEG Audio Layer II (mp2). 224 is considered near-CD quality, just like 128 is considered near-CD quality for MP3s. -
Thanks to all that replied! I'll go for XVCD then. Thanks once again!!
