I got a DL burner, an HP 630i. All the -R discs I burn aren't playable on my standalone, but the Dual Layer +R I burned plays fine on them. Is there a firmware update I need for this drive, and which utility/process should I use? If +R is the most reliable for this burner, I can switch to that, but I have loads of -R that I would hate to see just go to waste.

  3. There is firmware available here. The DVD630c is based on a BenQ DW1620 and I believe there was some compatibility problems with DVD-R and early firmwares so try the update. Or you could cross-flash it to a BenQ DW1620 Pro and get 4x DL speed too.

The firmware update fixed my problem. I can burn to 8X -R without a problem.
