I have a sony camcorder with passthrough feature connected via firewire to my computer. I would like to capture, and then do some basic editing in virtualdub and then do some color corrections etc and burn to dvd. I can capture using windv just fine but when I try to load the file in virtualdub it says, "couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd". Is there a better way to proceed? I have a bunch of vhs tapes (home movies) I'd like to put on dvd. Your help is much appreciated, I know very little about all this.

I am not a virtualdub expert but I think that VirtualDub Mod and Virtual Dub experimental version 1.6.1 supports DV type 1.

On the good side, you can open the .AVI file by loading the Panasonic DV codec...
Do a search in the tools section.. -

If I am not mistaken, it will open type 1 DV but without the audio which isn't very useful.

Edit: Either way you'll still need a VFW DV encoder codec to save out as DV, since the built dv codec in version 1.6.1 is a decoder only."Just another sheep boy, duck call, swan

I couldn't get Virtualdubmod to load the audio of a DV type 1 file. However, VirtualDub 1.6.1 experimental loaded the audio of a type 1 file without any problems.

Thanks everyone. I went to virtualdub 1.6.1 first and that worked. However, now I tried to convert in D.I.K.O and got the same message "couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd (unknown).

Does DIKO need a VFW DV codec? If so, install the Panasonic DV codec.

Some programs will only accept type 2 DV files. In this case, you should capture in type 2 with a program such as WinDV (which allows you to capture in type 1 or type 2). In order to use type 2 DV files, you must install a vfw DV codec such as the Panasonic DV codec. I personally use the Sony DV codec. But the Panasonic DV codec is probably just as good.
There is also tools that allow you to convert type 1 DV into type 2 DV. See the tools section. -
You need to have a vfw DV codec installed in order to load a type 2 DV file in a program that doesn't accept both DV types (i.e. these programs use a vfw DV codec).
If the program accepts both type 1 and type 2 DV (programs that use the Microsoft Direct Show DV codec), you don't really need to install a vfw DV codec. But chances are that your program only accepts type 2 (i.e. it needs a vfw DV codec). -
C'mon, this thread could have been solved in one post by a moderator. DV-Type 2 is best and use the Panasonic DV Codec and into VDub you go.
