  1. I have a sony camcorder with passthrough feature connected via firewire to my computer. I would like to capture, and then do some basic editing in virtualdub and then do some color corrections etc and burn to dvd. I can capture using windv just fine but when I try to load the file in virtualdub it says, "couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd". Is there a better way to proceed? I have a bunch of vhs tapes (home movies) I'd like to put on dvd. Your help is much appreciated, I know very little about all this.

  2. I am not a virtualdub expert but I think that VirtualDub Mod and Virtual Dub experimental version 1.6.1 supports DV type 1.

You can't capture DV in VirtualDub, but you're on the right track..Some people claim they can, but no, it's based on the older VFW drivers...

On the good side, you can open the .AVI file by loading the Panasonic DV codec...
Do a search in the tools section..

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is install the Panasonic DV Codec, and it should allow you to open Type 1 after that.

EDIT: pijetro beat me to it
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. If I am not mistaken, it will open type 1 DV but without the audio which isn't very useful.

You're right, even with the Panasonic VFW DV codec, Virtualdub and VirtualdubMod will only open the video, not audio of Type 1 AVIs. As you said, the new experimental version of Virtualdub (1.6.1) has a built in dv decoder and will open Type 1 & 2 AVIs.

Otherwise, with the 1.5 version of Virtualdub, you'll have to convert the Type 1 AVI to a Type 2 AVI.

Edit: Either way you'll still need a VFW DV encoder codec to save out as DV, since the built dv codec in version 1.6.1 is a decoder only.

  7. I couldn't get Virtualdubmod to load the audio of a DV type 1 file. However, VirtualDub 1.6.1 experimental loaded the audio of a type 1 file without any problems.

  8. Thanks everyone. I went to virtualdub 1.6.1 first and that worked. However, now I tried to convert in D.I.K.O and got the same message "couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd (unknown).

Does DIKO need a VFW DV codec? If so, install the Panasonic DV codec.

  10. Some programs will only accept type 2 DV files. In this case, you should capture in type 2 with a program such as WinDV (which allows you to capture in type 1 or type 2). In order to use type 2 DV files, you must install a vfw DV codec such as the Panasonic DV codec. I personally use the Sony DV codec. But the Panasonic DV codec is probably just as good.

There is also tools that allow you to convert type 1 DV into type 2 DV. See the tools section.

  11. Well see, that's what's odd to me. I even rechecked windv after reading here and I captured in type 2 files. But I will try the panasonic codec.

  12. You need to have a vfw DV codec installed in order to load a type 2 DV file in a program that doesn't accept both DV types (i.e. these programs use a vfw DV codec).

If the program accepts both type 1 and type 2 DV (programs that use the Microsoft Direct Show DV codec), you don't really need to install a vfw DV codec. But chances are that your program only accepts type 2 (i.e. it needs a vfw DV codec).

  13. C'mon, this thread could have been solved in one post by a moderator. DV-Type 2 is best and use the Panasonic DV Codec and into VDub you go.
