  1. Ok,
My friends send me clips all the time over the net all the time, and it is driving me nuts not being able to open them on my apple. Most of them are .avi and .wmv and originate from PCs (I still hate them) I have tried to get divx plugins but can't find the codecs to many of my video files. Does anyone know of any utilities that will let me view .wmv or .avi files with wierd codecs? Especially the .wmvs ... windows media player just says it doesn't have the codec. Any ideas or good codec packs that any of you know of? Thanks, it's been driving me crazy for too long now! Thanks again! (I'm sick of my friends talking crap about my apple, and the peole at apple just said... sorry, no idea... how about you get one of our techs to look at it and find out (for a big fee - so sort of pissed at that... anyone know what to do?- Thanks again

Have you tried VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ it often plays files that Quicktime can't.

    yeah,
VLC 0.72 and either WMP9 have done the trick for me,
for most avis i run into. I've also used ffmepgx 0.09p
to convert most wmvs over to AVIs that quicktime accepts.

  5. I'm running XP and I hate WMV just as much as MAC users. WMP9 won't even play WMV. I have to run it through Media Player Classic.

  6. WTF are you guys talking about? .wmv plays fine in WMP9.

  7. It should play it fine but on my PC for some reason it won't no matter what I try. Has something to do with the installation of the WMV Encoder package, but I haven't found a way to fix it short of a complete reformat/and reinstall and frankly WMP9 isn't worth doing all that.

  10. You could ask major over in the ffmpeg forum. He probably has archival copies.

I used to feel this way about QuickTime. I got over it, and eventually QT got better.

  12. LOL, I just clicked on this thread to say, 'I hate .MOV files, so now we're even.' You beat me to it smurf, sort of. Actually I don't mind Quicktime too much, although it is not my first choice - beats Real Media, though.

    Phathead,
you could just as soon use ffmpegx0.09p for conversion.
    I did and it's great.

  14. I can't use the workaround posted here with the most recent version of ffmpeg. It won't work. He says the 'a' release is needed.

  15. Okay I just installed WMP10 since 9 hasn't played WMV for me in forever, just to see if it fixed anything. WMP10 wouldn't open at all even though all seemed to go smoothly. And when going to unistall it gives the error message and removes WMP10 from the add/remove list. Had to roll back the system to get 9 back. I have nothing but problems out of WMP.

  16. Well one good thing came of it though. After installing 10 and rolling back the system WMP9 nows plays WMV just fine. Just too confusing
