I convert my DV type 1 (Canopus ADVC 100) to DV type 2 (Microsoft) using Canopus DV type converter. I load this type 2 DV into VDub, and then set it up to compress to XviD. It requests a missing 'statsfile' - which seems to be where it expects to find codec information of the input DV, for the 1st pass of the 2 pass XviD compression ... but there the trail goes blank! Where is this file 'usually' to be found? Or, if it needs to be created - where to locate it? It is impossible to process to XviD without this 'statsfile'.

  2. Try installing the free Panasoinc DV codec. This should allow vdub to load and process any type of DV file. Save you converting all the time too.

The Panasonic VFW DV codec won't handle a Type 1 Avi in Virtualdub - you don't get the audio. The native DV decoder in the new version of Virtualdub (version 1.6.1) can handle both Type 1 and Type 2 DVs with no problem. Maybe you could try the new Vdub and see if you still get that error message.

You might also want to check out this link re xvid setup - I think you have to make sure the same statsfile name is used for the second pass.

The XviD setup under VDub 1.6.1 requires a statsfile it says is a bitrate curve file called .pass I have attempted to save this in the 2-pass setup/1st pass, which then is the same file for the 2nd pass. It does not locate the file when I press Save to AVI. In some forums it advocates the use of the file-naming structure .\.pass to get around what might be a bug(?) Other sites recommend a file-name of .statsfile - but my XviD setup definitely uses the .pass file-designation.

I am capturing from an ADVC 100 in type I DV - VDub 1.6.1 is at home with this type, apparently. But it fails to convert to XviD simply because the .pass file-setup fails. Any ideas? I attempted a conversion to type II, and it too could not locate the .pass file - even though I had specified where it would be located.

As an aside, I converted Type 1 DV to MPEG2 using MainConcept - then to XviD using AutoGK - resulting in marked desync - even though the Type 1 DV/MPEG2 was perfectly in sync...

Am I right in believing that if the ADVC 100 produces DV Type I output - that it MUST be captured as Type I? There are no capture packages that can render this 'instantaneously' to Type II? I have the Canopus I to II conversion software - which takes several minutes to change the format, so I am inclined to think it must be converted post-capture?
