What's the best/fastest software to copy a non-encrypted commercial dvd to my hd? I'm not asking about which drive or what dma settings or firmware. Just use windows explorer? Maybe use DVDDecrypter? I just want to get the files on the hd without any extra compression or modifications. It just seems too simple.... I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious. TIA

  2. DVDDecrypter. Works everytime on anything. Plus you don't have to worry about being wrong on encryption.
Still a few bugs in the system...

You can use Windows Explorer or My Computer to copy ANY DVD to your Hard Drive, encrypted or not. After all, all you're copying is the files. It's just that most times it's more convenient to run them through a ripper to remove the encryption. In this case, there's no express need to rip as there is no encryption, but DVDDecrypter has the advantage of being able to rip directly to ISO, using ISO Read Mode, which is a nice, quick, pain-free method of ripping DVD-5 in particular, and leaves you with an ISO which you can readily burn with many apps.

So to cut a long story short, DVDDecrypter in ISO Read Mode, or File Mode if you want to do any mods to the files later on
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks! That answers the question. I guess I never tried to just copy the files off of a dvd before. I thought dvds were like audio cds, where you couldn't do it without using a ripper. So... if you don't want to change anything and it is a small dvd that will fit on a dvd-r, you don't need to break the encryption? If that's the case and you have dual layer dvds, making backup will be easier than ever.... Am I right on this?

If it has encryption, you need to rip.

jimmalenko - Maybe I'm missing something here..... I would try it myself instead of posting this, but I just happen to be ripping one and burning another right now. Could you please explain?

You can copy it to your hard drive encrypted or not. They are just files. For the pure act of copying files, you won't encounter any issues. However, if you wish to do anything with the files, you need something that can remove the encyrption.

The encryption is a feature of the disc as well as the files themselves. If you wish to burn back to disc, you need it unencrypted because you can't put the encryption back onto the disc.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. You're much better off ripping a disc than copying it using Windows Explorer.

Windows Explorer is MUCH SLOWER from my experience.
