I have been trying to convert some HDTV Xvid episodes down to a smaller Divx file. Playing the files inquestion in media player looks good. When I try to convert them in VirtualDubMod, however, blocky boxes (sometimes dicolored) pop up most noticeabley when high motion occurs. The boxes occur in preview mode as well (even stepping through frame by frame). I've resorted to using Vidomi to convert it to a higher quality Divx and then compressing it again to avoid the boxes. How come Vidomi does it right and VDub does not and more importantly how can i fix it?

    Thanks in advance for advice.

Uninstall all your mpeg 4 codecs and reinstall only the latest Xvid and/or Divx.

The file is much larger than the rest in the collection and i'd like it smaller.

What's the best way to uninstall the xvid codecs?

control panel->remove programs. try remove ffdshow also if you have it installed. it might just be enough to reinstall the xvid codec and divx 5 codec.

Thanks guys. I removed all the codec packs i could find and reinstalled Xvid and that worked. I have a feeling that the problem was the DivX codec was decoding my Xvid avi's.

    Thanks again!

I have another problem. When I try to open avi files in VirtualDubMod that are 4cc Divx 3 low motion, Divx 3/4 high motion, mp43, mpg4 it crashes "gtcodec2.dll". Actually, it seems like 4cc "Xvid" and "Divx/Divx50" are the only ones i can load right now. What do I need to get that working again?
