  1. I recently purchased the SONY RDR GX300 and just tried to reauthor a 2 hr program recorded in SP (2hr)mode. When I get to the part where the software actually does it's work (begin output button) - it gives me the following message "The combined Bitrate of the clip exceeds the upper limit for a standard DVD. The current Bitrate is video:9800kbps and Audio:256Kbps - combined to 10056Kbps. The combined Bitrate can be no longer than 9848Kbps.

I went ahead and overrode this warning anyway and it plays fine on all 3 of my players - BUT - I don't get this. Can someone explain the following.
    1. How can 2 hour mode give you a 9800kbps rate? I noticed that even the 4 HR mode the files show up at 9800 kbps in TMPG and I get this error. How can this be?
    2. Am I really burning a non compliant DVD?
    3. Do I have to reauthor (like with TMPG express) to get this to work correctly? I did try reauthoring the 2 hr file at 5000Kbps (set by TMPG) and I didn't get the warning - but maybe the warning is bogus anyway (?)
I definitely don't want to start down this path and then find later I have problems with other players (even though mine work).

Has anyone encountered this or have insight into this? I saw the posted VBRs for the SONY on another post and they were NOT listed as 9800 kbps for each mode. That would make no sense. TMPG does show it as 9800 video, 256kps audio though for 2 and 4 hr in my test.

    Thanks.

    Check out this page:

The DVD spec. says that the video portion cannot exceed 9800 Kbps and still be fully compliant. But more and more players are hitting the market that will play any allowable MPEG2 bitrate up to 15,000 Kbps. Our Panny standalone goes up to 15,000 when in the FR mode, and all our players like it fine

I wouldn't worry about the warning unless you have fussy players in the house

  3. Capmaster, I'll check out that link thanks. Any idea why TMPG could be telling me this content was recorded at a higher bit rate, even when the SONY recorder is (should be) recording at lower rate in 4 hr mode. I'll test 6hr too and I'll bet it gives the same warning and tells me the video is 9800kpbs. Doesn't make sense. That's why I think TMPG might be reading it incorrectly, maybe because of something SONY did. From an earlier post I remember someone said that SONY was using VBR and the rates given decreased significantly for each lengthening of record time. I have the figures written down at home but not in front of me now.

One of them is confused. Try this and maybe you can narrow down which one has the issues:

  5. I tried the bitrate tool. Thanks much that was useful. I'm not 100% sure I'm using it properly though it doesn't seem too complicated. I imported some of the VTS files and ran it though. It showed around 5200 (give or take) peak and around 4300 average. I also ran a VOB which was the menu. That one was in the same range except there was one spike up to 9802kbps. Am I using this correctly? Any insight into why that spike appeard in the menu (tmpg menu). THe spike seemed timed with with the motion menu timed out and went back to the beginning. The actual video was lower though. Could be the 15 icons all switching at once gives the spike (?).
