Which of the following would produce better results for VHS capturing?
a) Capture at 640x480 using Huffy/MJPEG and then resizing to 352x240
b) Capture straight to 352x240
I read somewhere that if you capture straight to 352x240 from a VHS source you lose half of the original resolution.
Capturing at 640x480 is supposed to solve that problem, but I was wondering if you're just going to end up resizing to 352x240 anyway, is it even worth the extra time to capture at the higher resolution first?

All of this depends on you, and since every VHS tape is different, there is no real standard. Let's also not forget that once you add the second field and use 480 horizontal lines of resolution, then you are faced with new little bugs and problems, such as Interlacing distortion and stuff like that... I always capture straight to VCD res when using VHS tapes as a source, since that is essentially what VHS res is anyway.

i read somewhere (i think Nicky Page's article from http://www.divx-digest.com) that it's best to capture @ 352x480 then downsize that to 352x240 when you encode. i can attest to this first hand, and it does look better than capturing @ 480 vert.
hope that helps
