  1. I am trying to re-encode the sound portion of a video file. The video is fine in Mpeg-1, but the audio needs to be encoded to DVD specs so I can use it in DVD Studio. My understanding is that I can do this by selecting passthrough (ffmpeg) from the codec menu, selecting encode video, selecting the right audio settings, along with encode audio, and then encoding.
However, when I do this, I get a HUGE file of raw video with the correct audio. What am I doing wrong? I don't get it

  2. You should simply encode the audio by itself, then import the two files (video and audio) in DVDSP. The preset to use to encode audio only is "Movie audio to mp2" (or ac3).

  3. Thanks major,
The problem, however, is twofold: 1) The audio portion of the file is preventing the entire file from being imported at all, which is why I want to re encode a muxed file, and 2) I really would like to know what passthrough is SUPPOSED to be doing. I thought it was supposed to be just passing the video through unchanged, not converting it into a raw video stream. It's behaviour as it stands is... confusing to me.

  4. 1) Use Demux to extract the video portion, and 2) The passthrough is supposed to passthrough but currently only for AVI files.

  5. Thanks. That explains things. I thought I was being dense or something regarding the functionality of passthrough. Thanks again for the input

Ohh noooooo! I just registered just because I needed this option to make some AVIs out of (DivX)MOV files!
Ok, the money was spend good anyway!

Why do I really need this you might ask?!
    1) I have some old movies that have been "fixed" with 3ivx's DivXDoctor and I would like to play them on my DivX DVD player (but that's not very important)
    2) I want to join a lot of small (DivX) AVIs and this is very easy with QuicktimePro but you can then only save as a self contained MOV

So please see this as a feature request - either make it possible to "passthrough" also other movie formats than AVI or make it possible to select an entire folder as source for the join feature in ffmpegX, please!

    Thanks Major!

  7. OK, request added in to-do list.
