Hello, i am from Romania and i'm new to this. What DVD-ROM do you advice me to buy? I have these options: Plextor, Toshiba, Asus, Lg, Nec, Gigabyte. Thank you

  2. Plextor's tend to have a good name, although I have found them to be rather expensive.

It's not on your list, but if all you're looking for is a ROM drive I would suggest looking for a Lite-on. I have started specifying these out of choice based on price, reliability, and damn good performance when it comes to ripping. Easy to hack too - if you're in to this sort of thing.

Personally I have had problems with the DVD +/- R compatibility with Toshiba drives, although that was some time ago now and they have probably improved. Of the remaining ones on your list, the LG I used in a build a little while ago seemed OK, so in the absence of a Lite-on in your area, I'd probably lean towards that one.

  3. I have a LiteOn 166 & it's been fantastic (although it sounds like a 747 when it spins up). I've also heard good things about AOPEN DVD-ROMs. However, since neither is listed as an option, I'd probably go with a Toshiba.

I've had a couple of Toshiba's, one for about 2 years. No problems and they seem a good value for the cost.

I agree with Shocker and hunghuynh. The Lite-On DVD ROMs have been some of the best on the market, and certainly the fastest rippers out there.

    gaijin,

You might also want to browse reviews made by actual owners by going to user forums for the particular brand. Google the model number or brand with "forum"
