  1. I am a first timer here, so here goes. I am having a problem with my back up copies of SWT. I wanted to make back ups so my children did not ruin the originals. I have backed up all of my other DVDs with Decryter and Shrink and had no problems until now. I had difficulty ripping the trilogy at first, but then I read some helpful tips on this forum and eventually made the back up copies. I played them on my computer and everything played well. When I put them into my stand alone DVD player(GoVideo 4400) they paused countless times. So I tried another DVD player(Toshiba) and it played perfectly the first time through. The second time through it started pausing again. I tested the DVD players with a different back up of another movie that worked perfectly before and I got the same pausing problem, but only on the GoVideo. I tried an original copy of a movie and it also paused on the GoVideo and the Toshiba. I am wondering if somehow the back up copy of SWT affected my DVD players? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The STAR WAR TRILOGY didn't affect your standalone dvd players. It's probably the dvd media you're using to back up the dvd movies. It could be your dvd players are not working properly. Put in your computer specs. that way it would be easier to help you out. What brand of dvd media are you using? What brand is your dvd burner? Not all brands of dvd media will work with every dvd burner manufacturer.

  3. Well my computer is a Dell with Window XP. Had no problems with it in the past. I have a TDK external burner. No problems with it either. I use TDK DVD-R and have successfully backed up all my other DVDs. I assume that I had a bad burn of the SWT. What confuses me is why my older burns and original movies started pausing.

  4. OK I have checked my DVD players. The GoVideo pauses on all movies, back up or original. This should mean that the player has gone bad. The Toshiba pauses on some movies and not others and it doesn't matter whether it is a back up or orignal. I am confused why this happens. All the movies have worked in both DVD players up until I tried to watch the SWT. Could the burn speed effect how the player reacts? Would a slower burn speed help?

Burn speed is irrelevant if it happens with the original. Those are pressed, not burned.

    Try cleaning your laser lens.

Using crappy media can cause skipping and pausing. What brand of dvd media are you using?

  7. I use TDK DVD-R as my media. I have had great success with it so far. I have cleaned the lens on both DVD players and nothing seems to help. Maybe both of my players have gone bad at the same time, but I find that difficult to believe, but I guess it could happen.

Use DVDINFO PRO or DVD IDENTIFIER to find out the exact media code which will tell you who is the exact manufacturer of the TDK discs. Some of TDK discs are manufactured by CMC which is considered crappy dvd media.

Strange.... I see only the following possibilities (ruling out both units crapping out at the same time):

    1) Lenses dirty

    2) All the discs are smudged or dusty.

    That's it

Since it does it with originals and backups, discussing the DVD-R media is pointless. Besides, TDK is decent stuff. If you've cleaned your lenses, and checked the discs/cleaned them, then I can't imagine what it could be right now.

  10. Well I tried cleaning the lens on the GoVideo again and it won't run through the complete cycle I checked the cleaning disc for scratches and its perfect. I think something has gone wrong with the player. I guess I will get a new one and if the problem persists I will be back.

  11. Another question is...Did you apply a label to the DVDR? Applying a stomped label to the dvdr can cause some imbalancing which causes pauses and skipping. I've had first hand experience with this. The TDK media is very good media and should not be the culprit.

  12. Before you buy a new one, take a pressed disc and an burnt one to the video store and test it there. If it works fine, then go ahead a buy a new one.

  13. I cleaned the lens on the Toshiba and it ran through the complete cycle, but it doesn't seem to help. What a shot to the pocket book, two players goin down at the same time.

  14. Well I don't use labels. I do write on them though. But I have never had a problem with that. All my burnt movies have played very well up until now. That is a good idea to take movies in to test the new player. My question would be what if the new player has the same problem?

  15. Open them up and clean the lens with a q-tip wet with alcohol, works better than a lens cleaner, just don't press too hard. I've also had to clean the spindle and the upper part that sits on the top of the disc before. If they get enough lint etc. on the spindle the disc slips causing skipping, I've seen it happen several times.

  16. Do I have to open the whole player or can I do the cleaning from tray opening?

I went with the media being the problem because I do recall TDK used CMC for some of their dvd media. I should have checked before I posted because it was DVD+R not DVD-R that has CMC as the media ID. There's your reason why I suggested media as the issue.

All you have to do is take the cover off, it's not hard. You need to clean the spindle as well as the laser, it can be done with a q-tip wet with alcohol too. Try not to leave any fuzz from the q-tip behind.

  19. I took the cover off and cleaned everything. It was very easy and guess what.........it seemed to work. I played a regular DVD and a back up. Both played very well. I have seemed to cure the problem. Thank you for all your suggestions and help. I also found out that my SWT back ups are not very good quality. I guess I will try to back them up a different way.

  20. Another thing, but doesn't apply to you, but someone who looks in in the future, is if you use dvdshrink & select still pictures, this is what you get.
