i was reading this divx guide and a guy said if you are doing a multipass divx that you should disable "update log file" in the divx encoder when you are on the last pass. i also wanted to know what is the difference with fast recompress and full processing mode in virtual dub mod. (is there any quality difference?) please anwser. please

Could be this forum deals more with DVD compliant video.

    HDDVD,

I would venture to guess that yes there would be a quality hit between the two settings. If there wasn't why would there even be a slower option?

  4. There is no quality difference between the 2 ways of compressing. Full Compression is needed if you are using VirtualDub filters. Fast Compression can be used if no filters are being used or the input file is, for example, an AviSynth script and the filtering is being done within that.

  5. Full recompression fully decodes the frames to RGB then recompresses them. Fast recompression leaves the frames in the YUV colorspace (the native colorspace used by all the MPEG1/2/4 codecs) for recompression. This results in faster performance because you don't bother converting to and from RGB and slightly less picture degredation because the YUV to RGB to YUV conversion isn't perfect. Ie:

full: MPEG -> YUV -> RGB -> YUV -> MPEG

fast: MPEG -> YUV -> MPEG
