My home pc is a dial up 56k and my office pc has DSL internet connection but it is behind proxy/fiirewall (squid) and behind router (cisco). is there a way to access as well as be able to control my pc at our office at night from my home pc so i can work on some documents and be able to run or close a program in my office pc? our proxy/firewall is very strict, all ports are blocked except port 8080 and 8443 and nothing i can do about it and i hate the system administrator for that. .

yea --- there are ways if at least one port is open .. but much much easier to have system admin port forward a port to you -- but i gather fat chance of that ..

anyhow = you have build a tunnel on 8080 ..... dial up access will be painfully slow though ...

  5. If they are both XP (and in some cases that does not have to be the case) you should be able to use terminal services which is built into XP. Even at our place (where security is the bane of most everybody) they allow this process if set up correctly...

    Or maybe not....

Most companies won't allow for this, in fact most will probably fire you for accessing a work computer from home. Unless they tell you it's OK in which case they will specifically instruct you on how to do it so that no mistakes are made.

But if it is allowed and your work PC is running XP Pro you can enable Remote Desktop and IIS in order to Remote Desktop via any PC with Explorer. I think there are also freely downloadable clients to access the XP machine from other Windows variants available at the MS website. I use Remote Desktop for a couple of my home computers so I can get at all my files from anywhere and keep an eye on things.

  9. ...or you could try www.gotomypc.com
(I do not endorse them btw)

Simple setup.. no VPN tunneling knowledge required.
Free Trial month. Works well so long as host
computer (remote computer) is on broadband
even if user is on dialup. Gives
you a full workable pciture of your remote's
desktop on screen similar to PCANYwhere/NT Terminal Service

If serious about work access; best to ask work to purchase
    citrix terminal server system.

I second gotomypc... It's on my desktop here at the office and allows access at home to this machine (as if I ma typing on it) ... they offer trials. and on a 56k dialup it is not bad.

  12. Let us know how it goes. If you don't go with the
service you'll need a spyware scrubber to remove
    the gotomypc app in full.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I don't think you should be doing this.

Being an IT techie, I would kick your ass if I worked with you and found out you'd done this without my or anyone else in the IT Department's permission

Most companies have a remote access policy for some very good reasons, and security/integrity of data is the main one. I would enquire at your work if access from home is allowed, cause you really don't want to be ******* with your work PC and having your IT department find out. And they WILL find out, I assure you. An alternative might be to email the files to yourself at home, then email them back to your work when you're done. Dialup will be S..L..O..W.. too

On a side note, One of the benefits of working in IT is that you can make things as hard or as easy for people as you like, depending on whether you like them or not

We removed internet privileges from one guy at our work, because he was clicking Yes to install all this spyware shit on his work PC, and calling us up every couple of days saying he's getting popups and whatnot ...bloody marketing
    If in doubt, Google it.
