I've just started using a DV camcorder Samsung VPD101, and following some advice to check out its quality I recorded some trains moving at speed.
The picture is great, no faults, there, but in the moments before and after the train passing when its obviously quiet, all you can hear is an awful sound thats like a gale force wind blowing across the microphone. It wasnt windy on most of the days i went out and I had the wind cut enabled on the camcorder. I couldnt really get rid of the sound either on the pc using a wav editor as it was too engrained into the audio track. I have had it recording in 16-bit sound. It does 16 or 12 bit.
Anyone got any tips on how I can get round this problem. God knows what it would sound like if it was really windy! Any tips much appreciated.

Most (all ?) camcorder microphones are complete shite. They have a relatively low dynamic range, they pick all sorts of extraneous noise, and they are too close to the camera and not close enough to the action.

If you seriously want to improve the sound, either invest in a decent microphone and leads, or capture sound to a dedicated audio recorder and sync it up afterwards (that's what clapper boards are for)
