Nero is kind of the 'Swiss Army knife' of burners. It does everything, some things not so well. There are plenty of other programs, some more specialized.

Deepburner and DVDDecrypter are two freeware ones. There are more listed under 'Tools' to the left.

It depends on what you want the program to do. I just use Nero to burn, I have never bothered with the other features. Works fine for me in that capacity. I normally use DVDDecryter for ISO burns, but Nero does it just as well. Try a few of the others and see what works best for you.

EDIT: I use Nero 5.80 with my older burners, but it wouldn't work with my P106 or the Sony DVD burner in my other computer. Wouldn't recognize the drives. I was forced to use one of the bloatware 6xx series. Works fine, though. I believe the 5x series go up to .99. Still available at the Nero site.

it won't burn my DVDs anymore like 6.3 did, it acts like it's going to do it, but then just chokes and ejects the disc; it bites

Use the NERO CLEAN TOOL. First try uninstalling NERO BURN then use the NERO CLEAN TOOL which you can download from here
    http://www.nero.com/us/631940828445001.html
Then reboot your pc after using the CLEAN TOOL, then reinstall NERO BURN. I have no problems using NERO BURN version 6.6, I had used version 5.5 10.42 for the longest time until Plextor came out with a firmware to enable bitsetting using the latest firmware for their 708a drive and the latest nero burn.

I think you mean NERO 6.6 unless NERO has another version out.

My take on Nero is this: If all you want to do is write stuff to a CD/DVD, there are many leaner meaner applications for this. And for every other (not related to burning stuff to disc) task Nero tries to perform, there are better applications, most of them free.
The Swiss Army Knife analogy is true - with the addition of that Nero is possibly a Swiss Army Knife lookalike. And have you ever seen a car mechanic or carpenter using a Swiss Army Knife (even "the real thing")?
For DVD Video, use ImgTools Classic to create image, DVDDecrypter to write image.

  12. Hmmm . . . upgraded to Nero's latest and greatest 6.6 from 6.3.xxx via official update download from Nero.com, but the upgrade removed access to Nero Burning ROM and Nero Recode which was available prior to the update.

I reinput the key used for 6.3, but it was rejected as invalid. Had to go all the way back to a registration key for Nero OEM 6.00.28 that came with my DVD burner. This restored Nero Recode but not Nero Burning ROM (which the OEM did NOT include).

Anyone else have this problem or something like it?

    Is a puzzlement . . . .
