  1. Hi,

I have run into an odd issue with my Philips DVP642 during DVD playback with one title (Unbreakable - Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson). The DVD menu works fine, but as I start the movie up, the DVP642 begins to display an icon in the upper right portion of the screen. The icon looks like a movie camera with the fraction 1/3 displayed to the right of it. The icon covers up a portion of the movie display and is extremely distracting. I have not found a setting in the DVP642 menus that will remove it. Messing with the remote buttons does not reveal a solution. I have not found any reference to this icon in the manual either. Anyone have a clue as to what it is and how to get rid of it?

    Thanks,

    Ender

  2. That's the "Angle" icon. Some DVDs are authored with multiple angles at certain points in the movie. I've seen angles that allow "branching" to alternate endings, display popup windows with information, and changing the language displayed. It's up to the producer of the DVD.

There should be an "Angle" button on the remote. Press it when you see the Angle icon on your TV.

  3. Thank you for your quick reply. It seems you are correct. I found that I can make it go away if I hit display, toggle the angle setting from 1/3 through 3/3 then back to 1/3 and let the display time out. For some reason the angle icon times out as well. I have no explanation for why this works *shrug* but it does. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    Regards,

  4. Has anyone else been able to make this work to remove the angle icon? I've tried it a dozen ways, but most of the time I just get a hand icon in the upper left, and the angle icon stays where it is no matter what. The thing drives me nuts, so any advice for removing it would be deeply appreciated...

  5. That's one of the few things I dislike about this player. If there's multiple audio tracks on a DVD, it'll skip to the second audio track. I just have to skip to the one I want, and it's an inconvenience, but I live with it.

  6. Yeah, overall, I think its a great player, considering the price and versatility. But the angle icon is my main peeve about it - I don't want to watch an entire movie with that stupid thing up there. I can't believe that they'd make it and think it was a good idea to have that there all the time - I called and asked them about it, and the guy implied that it was a really great feature, and that I should be glad to have it. I'd be thrilled if someone figure out how to get rid of it, or if it was gone in the next firmware...
