  1. My issue is while capturing from my Sony DCR-TRV460 Camcorder, I get the occasional frame with snow or artifacts in it. Actually, there are whole blocks of pixels that seem misplaced. The best way to understand what I'm talking about is to check out the picture below which contains to separate frames illustrating this problem:

Sometimes the capture will go a few minutes without this problem, other times it happens every 10-30 seconds. These artifacts are not found within the original DV tape.

I've tried two capture software applications: WinDV and Roxio DVBuilder. The WinDV works much better yet I still have the problem above.

Here are my system and other info:

    Win 2000 Service Pack 4
    Dell P4 1.80GHz
    256MB RAM
    Connecting through PCI Firewire Card

    Sony DCR-TRV460 Camcorder

    WinDV Software Settings:
    Discontinuity threshold: 0
    Max AVI Size (Frames): 1000000
    type-2 AVI
    Every N-th frame: 1

I'd really appreciate anyone's tips or insight to solve this problem. More RAM? Different Firewire card? Different software settings? Explanation as to what would be causing these artifacts?

    Thanks,
    D.W.

More ram would be good simply to improve performance while capturing, but probably would not address this problem. If these aren't on the original tapes, I would suggest looking at the firewire cable as the next likely culprit.

Does this happen on all tapes ?
Can you try to capture on a different machine ?
