From what I understand, Epson is doing this to scare you into getting REAL Epson carts.
You should be able to ignore this pop-up and use the cart as is.

Another question: Is it better to replace a cartridge as soon as you get a "low ink" warning, or is it OK to continue printing until it runs out?
-
p_l,
I've seen too many of those "warnings" go on when there is still ink in the cartridge. And ink being so expensive, I usually run it dry, and it always prints an awful lot after the warning before it is really dry.
But that might not be good for the printer. I have always had HP printers and I don't think it hurts them. But maybe you'd better check in the manual first. Epson might be different. Better safe than sorry. -
Thanks Cap,
Yeah, I'm sure Epson would just love me to replace their overpriced consumables as quickly and often as possible, but I have actually seen it throw up another message at some point when I've just printed another DVD despite the low ink warning; it says something to the effect that you can print another xx (e.g., 63) documents like the last one with the remaining quantity of ink.
Has anybody let the carts on their R200 or R300 run out completely before replacing them? Any adverse effects?
djblade,
It just refuses to print now with the generic cartridges? Yikes!I've got generic carts standing by, too.
-
p_l,
I'm going to do a test to discover that myself within a few
weeks or so. I shall have anti clogging juice to one side
in case of emergency. I'm also going to test generics,
re setters, refilling originals..blah blah ..the whole works
I do know that the % quoted as remaining is not accurate.
How inaccurate I'm not sure. I think it varies between +/-.
but it is no where near the + 30% remaining, as reported
on the net. -

Guys
I have the Epson R200 (functionally identical to the R300). Great printer when it works right. But . . .several times in the last few weeks, I have started a print job on a disk and it gets about half done and then pauses. There is an on-screen window ( the one shown in p_l's post) that is showing the ink levels. Suddenly all the ink levels gray out and the printing pauses, forever. It never continues and I have to abort the job and end up with half or so of a printed disk.
Bummer.
Has anyone else experienced this too? Am I doing something wrong?
There is lots of ink, nothing else is going on in the computer, it just spits the bit. Why does it think there is suddenly no ink?
WinXP Pro, lots o' RAM and Harddisk, real epson ink cartridges.
Any ideas?
ThanksJust because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't after you . . .

Turns out to be a faulty cart, tried another, its ok
Bloody hands are a mess though......... -
Checj the epson utility at this site, it replaces the Epson monitor and gives you great control over how you configure your cartridges.
