TOKYO — Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. said they are backing the HD DVD format over the rival Blu-ray Disc scheme, announcing plans here on Wednesday (Oct. 20) to launch new notebook computers in 2005 with HD DVD drives.

  2. They're backing it because they developed it, no?

    In 2005, huh?

    I call bullshit.

    Why, you may ask?

Well, in order for them to build a NOTEBOOK with such a drive in 2005, those drives would need to be available in 5.25" PC sizes NOW. Since we aren't going to see the PC sized drives until ... MAYBE ... middle of 2005, that pretty much rules out seeing a notebook with them until CHRISTMAS next year, at the earliest.

But I doubt we'll even see it then.

They'll use whatever kind of drive catches on.
